Wow- I know I lived through the 80's, but I don't think I recognize anything you have there. However, during that time I was at a jazz music college, so maybe that had something to do with it. :) You'd think I was living under rocks though!

I do remember Grace Jones Slave to the Rhythm- that's probably one of my favorites!
InDulciJubilo
Well, the songs I listed are more club oriented, maybe that has something to do with it.
fentontfox
80's club tunes the must have is soft cell's tainted love 12" version which got mixed into their version of where did our love go i think i recall this being the first 12" single that the masses took on board and gave birth to that particular formats popularity.

Gee, I'm a survivor of the 80's and I don't recognize one single song or artist (I have heard the name Bronski Beat).

The 80's Dance Music Party never ends in the Salinqmind household. Offhand, I have a compilation CD with Pet Shop Boys "West Side Girls", Men Without Hats "Safety Dance", and Oingo Boingo "Weird Science" that gets a lot of play in the car.

I have a big collection of dance music, but much of it is probably 70's, too.

Does anyone remember when the music changed to New Wave, seemingly overnight? I remember watching late night concerts with Wolfman Jack on TV on Friday nights, which was way before MTV. And then one night there was all this strange...stuff from Europe I'd never heard of, and people who were dressed real weird. Pop Muzik, by M, for example. I remember Wolfman Jack looking kind of embarrassed and out of place making an introduction. " Where did this come from, and why? Where are the Doobie Brothers? What is that instrument - oh, a synthesizer?" Such were my thoughts in 1980. I adjusted! Good times....

I was more into Punk and New Wave (not particularly dance music New Wave) in the 80's, but I always liked Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Der Kommissar by Falco.

This pretty much sums up what I danced to in the late 80's:

Humanoid "Stakker Humanoid" from 1988:

Shwwooosh!

It's mostly wave not dance what i like, actually i listen to a lot of New Order at the moment (and they have GREAT dance remixes!!). Depeche Mode, of course, Bowie, Iggy and Fischer Z.

Does anyone here know/remember The Normal's "Warm leatherette" ?
And i fell for "I can feel your thoughts" by Leathernun.

Not to hijack this thread, lillie, but a group I think is German called Rammstein is extremely popular in an underground way here with many teenagers. I understand they are more popular in Eastern Europe.

The 80's tune that has most been on my mind lately is:

"Bedsit Land" by Soft Cell

Anybody remember this one?

...and yes, salinqmind, I can remember when "Pop Muzik" by M burst on the scene... My friend in England sent me the 45... It was the first harbinger that something different was on the horizon.
Accolon
Nope, haven't heard Bedsit Land, but I just found this:

Memorabilia is my favourite Soft Cell song. It sounds pretty advanced for being from 1982 or so. Some people call this the first Ecstasy anthem.

Then, in 1989, came this:

E-Zee Possee "Everything starts with an E"

Featuring the weirdest toasting ever by Mc Kinky.

Yaz's "Situation" is an all-time fave on my iPod. ("move out, don't mess around, move out, you bring me down....")

Oh, they're quite popular here. But they aren't 80ies, they are 90ies.
I am not sure if they are popular i eastern Europe. What i find intersting reg. Rammstein is, that in ANY American psychothriller or horror movie the evil ones are listening to them... like e.g. the evil ones in German movies listen to Marylin Manson ans Slipknot... strange isn't iz? Stereotypes...
InDulciJubilo
Wow...you guys should definitely check out some of the artists I listed, good stuff.

Will definitely keep my ears open. I must confess, though, that I am more of a Led Zeppelin kinda girl. ;-)

I first remember New Wave hitting in the late '70s with the B-52s, Blondie, and Elvis Costello. It was like a toned-down version of punk, and I loved it. Some of my favorite dance tunes:

-- Rock Lobster by the B-52s (you had to get on your back and wave your arms and legs around)

-- Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel

-- True Faith by New Order

-- Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer

-- It's Raining Men by the Weathergirls
salinqmind
Twitchly, how do you dance to "Sledgehammer"???
ForTheLoveofMando
I'm a BIG 80's music fan here and have been sort of stumped to put down a list here. Cause I do have many favorites. But which ones do I really the most? Sort of like Sophie's Choice to pick one over another to me, LOL!!
Mina Kiraly
Girls Just Want To Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper
Tainted Love by Softcel
Do You ReallyWant to Hurt Me by Culture Club
Anything by Men at Work
Let's Go Crazy by Prince
One Thing Leads to Another by the Fixx
Rock This Town by the Stray Cats
Would I Lie To You? by the Eurythmics
Shout by Tears For Fears

I'm going to go turn on my satellite radio and listen to the 80's channel now...

LOL! They are immensely popular all over Europe! Where did you get this Eastern Europe thing? :) (Where are you from; it does not say in your info?) They made a huge tour last year in Europe, playing four nights in a row in Berlin for 17.000 fans - and I was there! They do not care about America very much but I think they are planning a Sout America tour sometime in the future. More info: http://www.rammstein.com/News/ and www.herzeleid.net.

(sorry for the off-topic stuff)

Huh. I understand they're anti-American, but I thought the almighty dollar would trump any political feeling. They must be men of high principles! Well, if they want to be paid in pesos, so be it, it's all good.

Mr. Salinqmind was the one who said Rammstein was popular in Eastern Europe. I showed him your message above, and he now informs me he drew that conclusion because last year Rammstein CDs and memorabilia on Ebay only seemed available for purchase from people living in Romania! So now he's been set straight. Hey, give us some slack, we're Baby Boomers in Upstate New York, at least we know who Rammstein IS...

:D I give you twelve points and a medallion for knowing that such a band exists! :) :) :) I guess that they are the world's most popular underground band! ;)

About 80's: for several reasons there is lots of music from the eighties I like and listen to with nostalgia. But it wasn't really dance music (someone else said that, too). DANCE music did not emerge (for me) until very late in the 80's: Acid House, Detroit Techno and everything that followed since then...

Maybe we disco danced so much through the 70's that many of us just wanted to sit out the 80's!

*High-fives allure* I was a total Acid House freak in the late eigties. I still haven't recovered.
