Full Version: Writer Tom Wolfe And His Sartorial Style
Perfume of Life > A Civilized Perfume Affair > Talk About The Arts

There was an entertaining one page piece (p. 208) in the September issue of W magazine on author Tom Wolfe (he wrote "The Right Stuff" about the astronauts in 1979). Apparently he is a bit of a dandy. He's been wearing his signature outfit of a white suit, fitted vest, fedora for years in order to stand out against the often drably dressed literary crowd. He said he enjoys getting a startled look, but, "Don't ask me why I want a startled look. I'd have to lie down on that chaise and think about it."

He says Casual Fridays makes people look like they're fleeing before an invading army and that any man over 35 should wear a jacket and tie - that old men wearing shorts in October is "ghastly".

But the funniest part is the end, which made me think of our own dear Jeffrey. He said he uses fashion as a motivator. When he was having difficulty wrapping up "The Right Stuff" he forced himself to complete the book by putting on a black turtleneck sweater and khaki pants. He said dressing that way forced him to work, because he knew he could never leave the house looking like that, so he had to finish.

Now, I know J. is not opposed to khaki pants, but I thought the mentality of Mr. Wolfe would find a kindred spirit in our Jeffrey. :-) If you'd like me to fax it to you J, I'd be happy to!

Click to view attachment Jeffery, yoohoo . . . reply, or I will . . . here's a shot of Mr. Wolfe. Love the fit on his jacket. Airy, loose, and three dimensional.

HAHA!!!!

The fact that he used the word "ghastly" just made me laugh. Too funny!

hahahahahaha!!!!!

I think a turtleneck and kahkis can be pulled off in public without a problem... but the key is without a doubt the color and style.

You're right. In fact, I wear khakis and polo style shirts all summer long. My key to "diversity" comes in the choice of shoes and belt. I just like to "let my hair down" in the summer a little. But I see exactly where you're going with this, and can't tell you how appreciative I am of you thinking of me like that!

I guess I'm just a bit "old school" when it comes to dressing. What I mean is, when did it SUDDENLY become appropriate to wear khakis to a funeral visitation? When did it suddenly become okay to wear jeans to CHURCH, OF ALL PLACES?!?!?!?! Smaller, less rural areas of the country see this more so I would guess, but still!

At one point, I actually got into a face-to-face debate because someone told me, "You go to church to pray, not for a fashion show, Jeff." To that, I responded, "That's exactly right, and out of respect, you should do your part and put forth a bit of effort into it if you're such a 'believer.'" I don't think they quite liked my response, because it's the truth.

Of course, there are some in this world who are less fortunate, and can't afford a suit or decent dress clothes, yet go to church. They are without a doubt an exception to the rule. I was referring to the guy who pulls up in his new car, after just stepping off the plane from a two week vacation looking like he's going out for drinks at the local sports bar with the guys and plunks and walks into church to pray.

A lot of men, and women, actually underestimate the versatility a pair of khakis can offer. Pair it with a dress shirt, left unbuttoned at the top, layered with an APPROPRIATE tee, and you're literally the epitome of "casual chic." As long as they are FLAT front khakis, and the dress shirt doesn't have a button-down collar. hahahaha

Okay, I better stop!!!!
