Just got back from the grocery store. The Halloween candy has hit the shelves. I bought three bags of candy corn. THREE BAGS. Help me.
StAndrewsGirl
Gosh, Mary. I love the candy corn of autumn, too. It is the one cheap candy I have real affection for. Accept no substitutes. But I make it a policy never to pay for it (that sounds like another thread at POL!). Like a Buddhist monk with a begging bowl, rather than get it for myself, I wait to stumble across it or receive it from others. Otherwise, I'd eat it like it was a food and not a wonderful, silly edible accessory! Some years candy corn comes my way. Some years it fails to materialize. Last year the only place I ran into candy corn was in a hospitality dish at the community center where the kind hostess let me stripmine for the few little pieces. Ah, candy corn - sweet torment!

Hey Mary, I'll help you. Add some roasted, salted peanuts to one of those bags and I'll come over to help you eat them. ;-)
VelvetSky
Ohhhh girls. These bags were calling my name. I've put them away where I can't see them.

I'm weak. These things are like crack.
Cally79
I like the Indian Candy Corn with the chocolatey parts.

Next after that it's the peanut butter taffy chews with the peanut butter bits inside...mmmmmm!!!

Karen
VelvetSky
Karen, you little minx. You had to remind me about the Indian Corn. I love that too. And those peanut butter things....ahhhh. Would it be very wrong of me to buy some of those too?

I love candy corn, too. I love those little fat pumpkins by Brach's, too.
Anita- Adding Spanish peanuts to the candy corn is exactly what my Grandparents used to do every fall. As a kid, I didn't think it looked too appealing, but after I tasted it, I was hooked. Yum. Love that salty/sweet combo.

What you need, is discipline . . .
magdalene
Candy Corn is orange, just like Cheetos and Cheese Nips, so of course I love it.

I force myself to wait until after H'ween to purchase, at 50%-75% off, b/c I know I will down the entire (small size, please) bag in one inglorious sitting.

Last year, I forgot to buy... it was well into November before I realized I "missed out."
Rosebud
Forgot Candy Corn?!!! Well, this year buy twice as much I say. smile.gif

I had some Cheetos the other day and I thought of you. The telltale orange crumbs are so revealing. (I remember you saying that. lol)
GalileosDaughter
I don't like the way Candy Corn tastes. It's like wax. But I am helpless in front of it, I find myself mindlessly eating it even as I don't like it. I eat each piece in three bites, white, then orange then yellow. Candy Corn is Evil, I say!!

Sure thing. I'll PM you my address immediately.

Please, tell me, what exactly is candy corn?

It's a traditional Halloween candy made of sugar, corn syrup, and honey (so basically, sugar, sugar, and sugar), and each little piece is in the shape of a corn kernel. It's a traditional Halloween candy.
dorthea
Sounds good!!
Goldengirl52
Ok...here's an old trick that might work for you. Put it aside...do you have a freezer in another part of the house (basement, garage, etc??). Put it in the freezer. Wait until the weekend. Saturday is my day to eat whatever I want, junkwise. So, everytime you have a craving, tell yourself that you'll have it on Saturday. If you tell youreself you can have it "later", it has a different psychological effect than if you say you can "never" have it.

Just something that works for me!!
amjack

Thanks for the link, Amjack! I don't think you can have candy corn over here. I have never seen nor tasted them. Hm. :-(

Glad to help! (evil laughing)

Get the peanut butter taffy too!

The candy corn and peanuts would taste just like a salted nut roll huh? YUM!
One of my fave candy bars ever!

Karen!! Yes!! Almost like a Payday bar, now that you mention it!

Waving at GalileosDaughter!

Dorothea, believe me, despite its addictive character, you are not missing anything by never having eaten candy corn.
VelvetSky
Well....I think she's missing something. And it's a good thing for her that she is.

I once read this diet plan that allowed 5 pieces of candy corn. Please. That's like one puff off the crack pipe.

I must try mixing in some peanuts!!

I've always loved candy corn, too. You know the best way to eat candy corn? Stick pieces into the frosting on top of a cupcake. Yum.

Did you know that a ripe Fuyu persimmon tastes a lot like candy corn and is infinitely better for you? Do you care?...I didn't think so.
StAndrewsGirl
My favorite way to eat it (and I do love that technique of nibbling at it color band by color band) is to bite it in half lengthwise and stick it on my front teeth and wear it around for the amusement of others before eating it. All this is true without deceit. Its triangularity is pretty interesting, too, making it fun to clamp between the back molars and smoosh down, making a kind of machine action. It's fun to eat.

Dorthea, I think you might be confused and disappointed if you did meet candy corn in person. It's made with high fructose corn syrup now, as are many American candies, and doesn't taste as good as it did when made with real sugar as your European candies are. It's primary attraction is one of fondness rather than good judgment.
dorthea
Well, ladies, now I am going to judge for myself. A nice POL'er has offered to send me some.

Isn't POL a wonderful place!

I am happy as a child! :-D

It was never made with real sugar. History of candy corn. I'm sorry to say that corn syrup, more than any other ingredient, defines American prepared foods.
VelvetSky
LOL Lisa, I love you.

I LOVE CANDY CORN!!!!!!!!!!!
My normal method of ingestion is to inhale it piece by piece.
StAndrewsGirl
Oooh. Inhalation, birthday girl. Inspired. Literally. How about intravenous! One could become, we might say embody, candycorness. Nah.

So, Mary, do you eat it out of a bowl or straight from the bag while standing in the pantry door? ;-) I think you have been calling me Lisa. It's such a nice name. My actual name is Barbara, but I am really enjoying trying on Lisa - like wearing a new perfume!
victoria
Yikes, give me Peeps anyday. Candy Corn and Circus Peanuts I can do without. Maybe I don't like orange?
The only candy my Grandfather ever had at his house were Circus Peanuts.
VelvetSky
Jeez, Barbara, what is my problem?? I'm so sorry...forgive me. I'm an idiot.

Straight outta the bag.

Victoria, there are orange Pumpkin Peeps on the shelves now.
victoria
Oh, well if they are Peeps, orange is ok. I guess since Peeps decided they can do Halloween, maybe Candy Corn should go pastel and do Easter too.

Au contraire, dear Mary. It was an opportunity to try on a new name and consider myself in a different light. I quite liked the experience!

Sadly, there is in fact pastel candy corn at Easter time. Like I needed more opportunities.
StAndrewsGirl
Candy corn cannot be pastel. It is taboo. By definition, it is a harvest treat from the candy corn fields OF AUTUMN and must reflect that coloration.

However, I do think Peeps can masquerade as ghosts at this time of year and not lose their integrity, such as it is.

JMHO
VelvetSky
Just one more reason why I like you so much. Thanks, Barbara. Feel free to call me something other than Mary, any time you want.

I've seen the pastel corn. Bahh! A mere ploy to sell it at Easter. The pastel corn tastes different, I swear!

I like my Peeps left open for a few days in the cupboard so they acheive that sort of stiffened texture.
Like a marshmallow that you've had a long time in the bag and they just started to harden a bit. It's sort of like divinity.

I noticed Peeps were in the stores as halloween candy now. Hmmmmm...
Not sure if I will get them. Peeps were always my "once a year at Easter" candy and then I could leave 'em alone for a whole year. Besides...I am currently making a serious effort to lose some of the excess weight I've been carrying around.

When Valentine's Day comes I'll tell you about my cinnamon jelly gumdrop hearts obsession.
It's not a pretty story...hide the children! (monster laugh) Whhhhaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaa!

Dorothea, you see that this thing called Candy Corn does indeed have strange powers to induce sane grown women to act in such a fashion. I know that kind POLer who sent you this substance had good intentions and knew not what she was doing--such is the power of the corn. I suggest, that when you receive it, you do not open it but instead place it on the front steps of a church and turn and walk away. Do not look back. That is my advice.

You know, it really does. After doing some, ah, prodigious sampling, I have come to the conclusion that candy corn does in fact come in multiple flavors.
Cathleen56
The gods must have my bests interests at heart, because I've always hated candy corn. I don't think any has crossed my lips in forty years. I have other weaknesses, but this is not one of them.

I think Dorothea will be all right. To be able to eat candy corn, and enjoy it, that is, not spit it violently out of your mouth, you really need to have had it before the age of 10.

I'm with you Vic...about the Circus Peanuts...Ick. My Grandparents seemed to always have those around, too. I don't like Peeps, either, however. I'm not fond of Marshmallow.

St.AG~ I've used Lisa my entire life. I might try Barbara on for awhile. ;)
