Full Version: Give Me Your Picks For A Clean, Almost Soapy Amber.

You know, there is something about amber that can go into stale, week-old baby powder on my skin after a time. But....I like amber. So what's out there that stays dry and rather....crisp?...in the amber department.

Example of what I don't like: dusky, murky, almost dirty Shalimar
Jeffery
Soapy, amber???

My goodness, Sharil, why don't you just go the store and buy Prada Amber Pour Homme.

There was an editoral in "GQ" talking about the "barbershop soap" smell in it.

(Open mouth and sticking finger down my throat.)

<grin>

Confession time: when I first pressed the magazine strip of this to my nose I quite liked it. But then....well....the headache started to arrive. I do like the crispness of that one but something is off.

I mean sort of crisp the way that the dry tonka in DZing is crisp, say. Dry but soft, you know? Ambre Sultan is dry but it's quite peppery. I don't know what I want but someone out there will.

Hermes Rouge avoids the sentimentality of ambers.

Several of the Sonia Rykiel perfumes contain amber and do it with distinction.

I am curious about the Laura Mercier Ambre Passion. Has anyone tried it?
minette
have you tried the Ambre Soie in the Armani Prive line? it has a lot of wood and incense in it, to my nose. could keep it dry enough for you.
sharilstuff
Not really. I did a quick "fly by" sniff on those some time ago but for some reason I did not really want to explore them. I'll give it a proper sniff next time I'm at Nordie's.
rita
Wow, that is a tough order to fill. Could you be looking for a fragrance that is not really an amber per se ? Have you tried Intuition by EL ?

Top note : Mandarin, Bergamot, Grapefruit

Middle note : Gardenia, Rhododendron, Freesia, Double Delight Rose

Base note : Mineral Amber
sharilstuff
Yeah, I am having a difficult time describing or discerning what I want. I guess I would say I want something resinous and clean and a little spicy, but more amber than spice. In other words, I'm not looking for Cinnabar, you know? I'm probably looking for something that doesn't exist...haha
rita
Well now you described Ciara LOL

Year Introduced: 1973
Scent Type: Oriental - Ambery
Top Notes: Vanilla, sandalwood, patchouli, cedarwood
Heart Notes: Herbaceous spices
Base Notes: Frankincense, balsam, myrrh, raspberry

I'm am sure you will know what it is you're looking for once you smell the right fragrance.

Sharilstuff, how about MPG Ambre Precieux? It's a gentle, soft amber with the clean edge of a lavender note, which maybe isn't precisely dry or soapy but it does tone down amber's tendency to aching sweetness. It has a nice nutmeg note as well.

Try the newest L'Occitane amber scent. I've never been an amber fan, and I bought this as soon as I sniffed it because of the dryness of it. Unfortunately, L'Occitane SA told me it's being discontinued. She told me a lot of her customers have e-mailed the company complaining about this. I e-mailed the company as soon as I heard the news. It's one of the few fragrances I've purchased in a while.
Ayala
Tabu has a soapiness about it and plenty of amber, but clean it is not!
How about Anne Pliska? It's really gorgeous amber, and does not have the dirty edge that Shalimar has.
Perhaps also Obsession, though it is not really soapy. It does smell clean though, transparent, somehow.

I'm wearing Burberry Brit Gold today - I'm not sure if it qualifies as soapy, but it is a light, spicy amber that you might like.

The Prada Amber pour Homme is definitely a soapy amber - I know Jeffery hates it but I like it on me. :-)

STaG, I also have the LM Ambre Passion - it is a very sweet almost caramely amber. Probably not what Sharil is looking for.
Sariah
Om from the Gap. I am an amber fan so I have tried many, and this is the cleanest I've come across.
sharilstuff
Great suggestions, all!

I actually do have a soft spot for Ciara but I can't wear it without being transported by to high school in a not-pleasant way. I actually have a decant of Amber Precieux around somewhere so I'll grab and roll that one tonight. I really like Gap Om, but it's pretty hard to find these days, is it not?

Many others to make note of and sniff while I am out. Thanks.

Oh, dear, why do companies discontinue frags before the public really has a chance to try them and maybe love them. *pout*

Sharilstuff, can I assume you've tried L'Artisan's regular amber fragrance? I tried it a couple of times and found it quite fresh for an amber?
FiveoaksBouquet
I find Initial by Boucheron to be a very clean, dry amber. Definitely suggest giving it a sniff. it starts out brisk and dries down into a soft, clean amber.
Twitchly
Have you tried Anne Pliska? Not soapy, but the citrus adds a nice crispness.
deepmarine
I have it !

Dioressence By Dior. Strictly speaking it is not an amber, but it is rich and opulent but when it was being created, the brief was soapy and rich at the same time. It definately captures this. Other possibilities ...Terre D'Hermes and perhaps Clinique Aromatics in the Elixir ? I know that these are not strictly ambers but most people have very different ideas of what an amber is. For most I guess it is that slightly sweet rich oriental resinous scent .......Good Luck !

I suggest getting a sample of Il Profumo AMBRE D'OR, Crisp and long lasting, does not turn powerdy on me. L'Artisan Ambre Extreme. Jaliane Amber (Aedes and Luckscent) and for a truly special darker amber, the Amber from the new line Profumum with opium. MdG Ambre Preciux (a tad masculine I think)
Kingsbury Fragrances puts a a killer Amber called Classic Amber, very long lasting and rich.

I forgot, I agree with Ayala too! Try Anne Pliska, just one of my favorites!
sharilstuff
Anne Pliska is lovely, but does that "am I wearing Johnson's baby powder?" thing on my skin. Yesterday I found that decant of Ambre Precieux and layered it over the orangey Diptyqye Eau d'Elide I had on. Close.
Vanille
I love amber, and my absolute favourite is i Profumi di Firenze's Ambra del Nepal, which to me is a dry, raunchy amber. I also love l'Artisan's l'eau d'Ambre, and OJ Tolu.

sharil - I bought Gap OM in the last few months at a Gap outlet in Maryland. $4 for a $15ml spray! It's really impressive with great lasting power for the price.

How about the SMN Ambra? That to my nose is a very dry, clean soapy amber --- it seems to have
just a smidgen of incense in there somewhere --- but just a smidge.
Contessa
Marc Jacobs Amber
Clancurrey
I put on Jil Sander No. 4 tonight for the first time in months--going out for dinner and it is a crisp fall evening. This one comes up a sweet soapy amber on me. If you'd like to try it, PM me and I will send you a sample.
Catherine Fraser
you might want to try Profumum Fiori D'Ambra ambre/chypre dry, warm and clean. I think this is a Luckyscent exclusive.
Jicky
Bal a Versailles?

soft sweet spices, rich blend of floral, amber, spice and sweet balsamic notes, orange flowers
DimmaGreece
Terracotta Voile d` Ete .

Carnation,Iris, Ylang Ylang,Vanilla on an ambery base ...... seems strange but it smells clean and soapy.

It is, Dimma! Glo put me onto this one and I have worn it with sincere pleasure. Dry baked amber, shimmering golden light within. Good idea to mention it in this thread!
