There's always a lot of talk around here about chocolate and other sweets--candy corn, for instance--but we never seem to talk about salty foods we like. I am actually not the biggest fan of salty food, but occasionally I get a real craving for it. Here are a few faves of mine:
Anchovy-stuffed olives
Turkey pepperoni that's been crisped in the oven
Pickled caper berries with little pieces of parmesan
A spoonful of (cheap) lumpfish caviar on a boiled egg
Pieces of dulse--toasted if there's time, otherwise right out of the bag
What do you like?

I crave many things, but I settle for hard pretzels or green olives when I need my salt fix.

Anchovies on pizza, yumm!
And this is really bad, but I love the crispy Cheetos with that faux cheezy salty taste!
Oh, and gorgonzola in a salad is very good, esp if there is fruit such as grapes or apples in the salad as well.

Oooh! Oooh! Getting inspired here. Okay, then. Thick grilled steak with butter and Roquefort on top, sparkling with Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper.
What next?

Mixed nuts, low salt. Planters makes a good one (some heart healthy gimmick) which mixes pecans, almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts and peanuts. That's my fave. I love pecans. Pe-cahns, NOT Pee-kaans. LOL

Usually potato chips. And if they aren't salty enought I shake some more in, fold down the top of the bag,
give it a shake and repeat if needed.

Freewillastrology for this week tells Cancers to consume things as earthy and ancient as possible, like the Himalayan rock salt as old as dinosaurs, which prompted me to get some for Thanksgiving weekend. It is orangey and tastes nice, different from the French fleur de sel type that is a little bit blueish or purpleish. I don't know how to describe exactly what it tastes like, but it is tasty and absolutely not acrid if you run into a large still-formed crystal on your food.

Kosher dill pickles!!!! They are the best. French fries also hit the spot. I don't think there's a day I don't have fries. That could explain the extra rumpage I'm presently working on loosing.

I don't usually crave salt, but when I do these will do the trick:
Capers, olives, salt and vinegar chips.
(Waving at Besotted - Don't you love these?!)
Also the bacon from my local meat market and cheese curds!

My dietician found out that sometimes when I crave salt, I drink beef bouilllon. She told me very firmly to have tomato juice or V-8. More sodium AND far more nutrition, and only a modest calorie gain. So i switched over.
I also like green olives, the kind that are marinated in herbs and garlic. Sometimes it's actually very nice to have one single olive the very first thing in the morning before breakfast.

Green olives!! MMMM. I eat them right out of the jar. People cringe. Oh well.
Also Fishers dry roasted peanuts. Yes it has to be that brand and that kind.
I love salt!

Mmmm...salt...so much better than sweet in my opinion. Give me anchovies, bacon, spicy breakfast sausage and my favorite crackers ever, Nicole's crackers. Oddly enough, though, I can't stand having salt on my margarita glass.

For me, breakfast is not complete without Maldon's sea salt. It's the best. I put it on soft boiled eggs, broiled tomatos, chopped pineapple, oatmeal, Nutella, everything except coffee.
I also sprinkle it on Haagen Dazs chocolate icecream.

Black olives, from the olive bar, not the jar
Bacon
The bacon biscuits at the Hungarian butcher on Second Avenue near 80th Street? in NY are the best salt and fat delivery system yet invented.
That being said, I rarely crave salt and use it sparingly even in cooking.

Lay's classic potato chips
Top Ramen noodles (poor man's caviar!)
Steamed rice, lots of butter & salt
pasta served aglio e olio, with plenty of sea-salt
the saltier cheeses, like mozzarella and provolone
Sorry... I find MARMITE and VEGA-MITE kotch-worthy.
