This may rank among posts that other people groan at; ie cute things my dog or child said, but For the last few days I have asked my husband (the one who buys his grooming aids at costo) to smell one perfume a day and tell me what he thinks. The perfume has been applied to me. It is such a leap for him to do this because other than a horse and a saddle and dog farts I have never heard him mention an odor. So far here is his assessment, in his own words:I do not agree with him but find it is an interesting litmus test on a virgin nose.
Amourage Gold "old Lady smell, claustrophobic and suffocating" (he came up with old lady on his own!!!)
Vintage Femme "It smells soapy, no wait, now it is fruity, no wait now it is really sexy and slutty"
Opium "I am not crazy for this, it smells like a rich woman would wear it but that's about it.
today I am going to try number 4 on him.
what is interesting is that he has never heard of any of these. When I said "YSL Opium" I expected he would recognize that one, but he had never heard of it.

ha ha, funny test, Jane!
I know all of those. My favorite of the three is Opium. Some poor dude might think I have a trust fund, eh? What a surprise is in store for him! lol
I love his assessment of Femme because it does seem to morph exactly as your husband noted.

Amourage Gold...while I liked it, it was a bit over-the-top for me, too.
Can't wait for your husband's next synopsis!

Your DH is a natural perfumisto!
His comments are exactly why I have always loved Femme,
and why I don't find many occasions to wear it.

Today was Terre de Hermes. He loved it. He said "it is sporty, but sporty meaning Katherine Hepburn, not some gym teacher". He said he was going to steal it from me and use it himself (what have I done!!!), he said first it smelled like citrus but got much earthier as it developed. This one was a sure fire winner.

How refreshing to hear a 'normal' person's comments on fragrance. We perfume lovers go CRAZEEEE and overboard with our passionate love of the scent...then a 'normal' person makes it real...
I love that!
Especially poor naive men....we take for granyed we know the tell tale down wind of any of the Chanels, Diors, YSL, Balmains etc......you give him Chanel 5 to sniff and he says ' smells like a bordello' - FABULOUS!!
Makes me smile....

Terre d'Hermès sounds like a winner, jane. Nothing wrong with a shared perfume--I love it! It is very refreshing to hear the comments of a fresh nose! Keep 'em coming!

Stock up on Femme. He clearly knows a bombshell perfume when he smells one.

todays scent was Clean Fresh Laundry. I walked in, directed him to my sternum where I spray, he took one whiff and "soap"...dah dah, he was right again.
he was not impressed, but what can someone really say against the smell of soap.

Yay! More DH reviews. I love to hear what men think about perfumes. Thanks, Miss Jane!

Stunning assessments. I think you and Mr. Perfumisto could publish a book for the masses: Perfume for Dummies. It would be a useful, easy-to-understand volume. Cartoons would make it even wilder. You'd have a best-seller, and I'd stand in line to buy the first copy.

I walked into DH's study with my scented sternum 10 minutes ago. He put his nose to my chest and sniffed. He had a goofy look on his face. He sniffed again, and again, and again. At first I thought he was puzzled but he was just goofy looking "It smells like a real woman wearing real perfume" he said and then guessed it had to be a big time classic. "I don't know what I am smelling but it smells like the way perfume should smell, I like it alot"....then I told him it was Chanel #5. This he had heard of and was very proud of himself for knowing it was a famous scent. Then I tried to explain about the aldehydes and his eyes glazed over.

Jane, this is the greatest. I'm holding my breath for Monsieur Piegan Perfumisto's next *concise* review. He is nailing them. Heads up, Luca T. :)
His No. 5 review is further proof (in my book) that it's not about the hype. And his impression of the mercurial Femme is...perfect!
Thanks for sharing your "research" with us, PJ. We hope your assistant remains willing--so many more scents to analyze. Do you take requests? ;)

Oh man, Mr. Pieganjane nailed it with No.5, too! He deserves a round of applause! Encore, encore, please!

(Btw, I love No. 5, too, nice to know a man said it smelled like a real woman wearing real perfume. Love that).

so I just returned from DH's office where I again presented him with the scented sternum. This time he smelled and smelled and it took him awhile to respond. The last time he did this was with Femme, so I thought maybe he loved it. Well he didn't and his answers surprised me. He said it was "jejune" (he is a writer too) "trying too hard", "pretending to be sophisticated". The scent is Hermes 24 Fauborg eau de parfume. He didn't like it much, but I have always thought this was a sophisticated scent. I started to talk about "big white flowers" and I got the "whaaa" look from a few days ago, when I talked about aldehydes. I think he could not care less about the notes in a scent.

I must keep applauding. Do not let this thread end. When you run out of scents, just say so, and we'll send you a barrage just to perpetuate this Scheherezad-like read.

today I tried something odd on the new perfumisto. I applied the scent to my chest and he sniffed. He has taken to sniffing quite a bit before the proclaimation. "Well it is not fancy, and it isn't a big sophisticated perfume, but it is very special and hypnotic. It smells very pure"....and the scent of the day was AA Ambergris, but to get his rapt attention I (at first) said it was whale vomit.

the poor thing came home from the outpatient part of the local hospital a few hours ago where he suffered the hideous "procedure" that the over 50 set must do every five years". Anyway, he is fine, but yesterday when he was fasting I tried to get him to smell vintage aphrodesia and he really had a hard time with it, too strong, he yelled and by the time it settled down he had lost interest...ok so now I am about to go into his office and let him smell Biografia de natura (a brazilian perfume)...here is the verdict:
"I like it a lot" his eyes get wide "it is very sophisticated but also very healthy smelling, it reminds me of the cucumber in a Pimms cup".
this was a major winner.
