Full Version: Which Fragrance(s) Are You Resisting Buying Right Now?

About a week or so ago the Sisley SA gave me a whiff of Soir de Lune. The first time I smelled it last fall I thought I didn't care for it that much but this time I really liked it. Since then it's been on my mind and I'm trying to resist the urge to buy it.

At the same time, the Lauder rep indicated the parfum of White Linen, which is not always available, would be in the store in very limited numbers. Now that is something else I have been buzzing around getting at some time or other.

If I had deep pockets I would just go in and buy them both but being of the poorer persuasion, I have to pace myself and make choices. Now I'm thinking of using one of these two scents as a potential reward for completing the spring houseclearing project underway. Will I get one of them or will I resist? (Sigh...)

What are you lusting after right now and trying to resist? Do you think you will succeed? Will you make a plan to fit that purchase into your budget at a certain time? Is there something out there right now that is really pushing your buttons?

I feel for you FiveoaksBouquet!

Vol De Nuit parfum in the bottle with the airplane propeller. This is very decadent of me as I already have a mini parfum, but by the same token I'm so afraid of this fragrance disappearing either for real or just its original formula...they no longer have the Vol de Nuit tester at the Neiman Marcus in DC. The SA said that the fragrance was too rare and hard to come by of late to have testers anymore. I have been searching ebay and may splurge after tax day.

A couple of others I've been lusting for but don't feel a panic about just yet are:

Annick Goutal's Passion in edp since edt gives me a headache
Iris Poudre
Carnal Flower...a tuberose I can actually wear
Kai edp
original Opium parfum

Good Luck with your quandary FiveoaksBouquet

Thank you. I feel for you, too, Blackchat, and if you can get the propeller bottle, I would advise it for the reasons you state. One of my greatest regrets regarding a Guerlain was not buying, when I had the opportunity, the parfum of Après l'Ondée in the traditional bottle, one of my fave perfume bottles of all time. Now the perfume is on the chopping block and the bottle is long gone. Love that black and white label!

Ah, so many. I would love to have some vintage Sortilege, Ecusson, and Madame Rochas. I want full bottles of French Can Can and Narcisse Blanc--I'm down to dregs on my decants. I would love to own Hermessence Poivre Samarcande. I want Creed Royal Delight and Aubepine Acacia. I want Ayala's Palas Atena and Rainforest, and I wish I could afford to hoard Anya's Pan and Fairchild.

I've got long wishlists at Hove and Bourbon French--but I'm not resisting there. I plan to go wild when we visit New Orleans next month.

absolutely nothing....

I'm really wanting to get some Bois des Iles (sp?) (Chanel) but everything is sort of on hold right now.

At this moment, I can't think of a thing. But I have no doubt that one of you evil doers will begin to rave about something new or something vintage and I'll be off to the races in my quest for the new HG. This is a dangerous place.

Our dear, dear Susan has given me a half-full flacon of L'Artisan DZING!

This is one she had let me sample about 7 months ago in the form of a tiny vial. liked it then, but all I was really "getting" was the tender/sweet signature note of coconut/cotton-candy, and some of that "gerbil's cage" cedar shavings. Very nice...

But with this heapin' helpin', I can apply morre lavishly and get a better feel for what DZING! is about.

Big difference! Now I perceive that the tender-sweet notes are sharply counterbalanced by a very accurate gasoline/petrol note (not unlike FAHRENHEIT's), and a big whang of wild animal's urine!! This point is driven home by the cute little symbol on the flacon's label: a pretty lady in leotards gaily straddling a big ferocious tiger.

The Lady or The Tiger? DZING! seems to ask. It's about an equal amount of both.

There is also, my nose suspects, the faintest hint of a sweet spice... either cassia or ginger, methinks. But the fragrance stops short of making that spice note obvious-- which might render the seductive nature of DZING! too identifiable...

As you all know, I'm a big fan of animalics ("you can take the boy outta the country, but....."), and I have no problem waltzing through WAL-MART reeking of coconut cotton-candy and tiger's p!$$.

(-:

Now.... me seriously wants a whole new bottle of DZING!

I'm desperately lusting after a bottle of Stoned. I've come so close nearly every day to purchasing, but it's just so dam expensive. The odd thing is though - I'm not sure I really like it. I couldn't decide with the sample I had, it's just never enough! So I need a bottle to spray myself generously so I can decide!!!

It's weird Kas but the sometimes the things I crave most are things I am still unsure of.

Nothing to be honest.

I did for ages lust and really want Nuit Noir, but could not afford it and tried to talk myself out of it.
Search ebay for decants but they are expensive and far and few between. Then I managed to swap for a 10mls decant, so happy, infact very happy.

Good luck for those looking for the parfums in original bottles, keep your dream alive.
Jicky
I have resisted buying most of the following since last June

Bambou by Weil edp
Diorella/Dioressence/Diorrissimo,Miss Dior
Embrace Dreams - Mary Kay
Enjoy - Jean Patou - 2003
Escada Collection
Fleurs de Rocaille by Caron - 1933
Flower by Kenzo,
Magnolia Elizabeth W perfume and body lotion,
New York Perfume and body lotion,
Niki De St Phalle
Pure Deceit by Sarah Schwartz
Ralph (yes) perfume and body lotion, ,
She by Emporio Armani
Tolu - Ormonde Jane,
Vera Wang edp
Violet Elizabeth W perfume and b.lotion

I can take Escada Collection off the list, only because a dream poler has just done a swap with me. I'm still saving for other important things, so the ban is staying, but yes, the temptation is great. I've just checked out some gift sets of Flowers, Enjoy, and Embrace Dreams and am rediculously tempted by all 3, they are reasonably priced, but they MUST remain there until more important items in my life are dealt with/paid for.

Yes it's true, if I was loaded I'd probably order everything in the above list.
GalileosDaughter
There are so many I'm resisting right now.

I went on a very strict no-buy for Lent (although I broke it to buy the new Azuree Soleil since I thought that it might sell out, and since the SA had called me to let me know that it was in and I wanted to show my appreciation, lol).

But come Easter Monday, I'm placing an order for the new Delices de Cartier Eau Fruitee

I haven't sniffed it but I love the original Delices, and the bottle looks pretty.

You see, GD, I always knew perfumistas are so thoughtful--will go out of their way not to hurt a SA's feelings. I do the same! As an aside, is that Azurée Soleil a LE or something they are going to keep carrying?

P.S. That Délices Eau Fruitée bottle is scrumptious! I have often thought of buying Délices, largely because of the exquisite bottle. I probably will one fine day.

I resisted buying Vicolo Fiori for over a month. Yesterday I grabbed a bargain on eBay and bought it...

I only sniffed it once.

I'm resisting shaving soaps - in various fragrances.

So that sort of counts.

I already have six soaps at hand, none are more than 10% used, some have yet to be opened. Each soap lasts around a year or so. I have another one (rose-scented) en route from the UK, and have heard raves about a rosemary-lime scented soap - which I'm trying to resist. Of course the shipping is tolerable if I order two jars of soap, so that means ordering another jar to keep the first one company...

Not as expensive as another bottle of Antaeus, but also not so easily hidden...

Have you tried a decant yet? I find that's usually the best route for me when I'm still not sure. I can't count the number of perfume decants I've gotten and found that I didn't need a full bottle after all.

As for me, the only one I'm wanting much right now is Idole de Lubin, but I've still got some left in the decant. We'll see how I feel once it's gone.

I developed an irrational lust for Dzongkha a couple of months ago, after only sniffing it once and not particularly liking it. I finally had to race out to Neiman Marcus and buy the darn bottle. But you know what? It must have struck a chord somewhere in me, because I have been wearing it a lot and loving it. Go figure.

Right now, there is nothing on my wish list, although I would accept a free bottle of Chanel No. 18 just to have that fabulous bottle. :-)
carmencanada
I'm not resisting so much as avoiding temptation in order to keep the household fed...

But as soon as economic clouds clear up -- anytime now -- I'll have to resist bingeing on :

Chanel Bois des Iles, N°22, 31 rue Cambon (all of them horrendously expensive) and N°19

Divine's Divine

Estée Lauder Private Collection

Guerlain Métalys and L'Heure Bleue
FiveoaksBouquet
I think I've figured out a sneaky way to get around this question. Now I'm intending to use up my bottle of Eau du Soir, which will create a vacancy for Soir de Lune.
AbstractionWhiteRose
I'm embarrassed to say there's nothing I'm resisting right now because I've bought all those I've wanted. Eek.

LOL, Fiveoaks, you always see the good side! Actually, I must admit, in the spirit of Lent that it was pure AVARICE that drove my decision.

I have no idea if EL is going to make this a permanent addition to their line. But I got my greedy mitts on some, thanks to my wonderful SA!

Good idea Twitchly, but sometimes decants aren't enough for me either. I really like to spray all over and surround myself with a scent.
I'm saving up for 2 bottles of the new Chanels and still seriously considering a FB of Stoned!
ForTheLoveofMando
I can't think of anything in particular right now. I feel like I own everything I truly love now.

Right now I am trying to resist buying :-

Eau de Rochas
Diorella
L'Infante (Divine)
SL Fleurs d'Oranger
Iris Poudre

I can only afford to buy one of them this month, but which is it to be?
Sage Tzu
I am not a big Bond No 9 fan because they just do not last on me, except one I recently tried - New York Fling. I love this one, but at $175.00, I'll just have to keep resisting for now.
Morticia Addams
PURE TURQUOISE by Ralph Lauren. I tried it just once, a week ago, and I was smitten!!! I even have my own little rule that I have to try a fragrance at least 3 times before purchasing. Those who know my taste in fragrances will be surprised that a new introduction by a mainstream name could sweep me off my feet. Oh, dear, I want it. I think it's overpriced. I'm not fond of the presentation sticking a turquoise(raping the earth of her rocks) on the top of the dauber....

I will resist trying Pure Turquoise again, but it's calling to me.

(Does anybody know where I can purchase this frag off-price?)

im sitting on my hands trying to resist buying the 3 new chanels especially the rue de cambon 31.

Hi Morticia - Check out Imagination Perfumery. I saw Pure Turquoise there for about $38.95 for the EdP. I have purchased from them and have been very satisfied with their service.

Cannot wait to own:

Azuree Soleil by Estee Lauder (Tom Ford)

Yes, it is a Limited Edition (according to the Lauder press release) so I guess I need to hurry it up before they're all snatched up like last year. However, IMO, the new Tom Ford scents that get released this week will probably take some of the media hype away from AS...who cares, it smells wonderful!

Hi, mikeperez23, new member! Greetings and welcome! If you get it, please let us know how you like wearing it.

Thanks - how sweet of you - yes I joined POL as a Perfumista (or am I a Perfumister??) today. Neat site.

Actually, the SA at Neimans and I had a good ol' time last week when I was in there buying an Easter gift, so she gave me a rather HUGE sample of Azuree Soleil to try and I wore it last Friday to the office...

Amazing - first of all, let me say that if you've tried Virgin Island Water (the new Creed) this is similar. And that is a GOOD thing, since VIW is pretty great (I don't like most Creed frags, but they hit it out of the park, with VIW). What I find similar about both, is they handle the coconut notes VERY delicately and not too sweetly (more like coconut fruit not coconut milk).

In addition, Azuree Soleil has the most realistic salty beach smell I've ever smelled. Kind of like the salty notes that Eau des Merveilles by Hermes has (minus the citrus/orange) but instead of smelling like salty skin it smells like the actual beach itself. You ever go to the beach and roll the windows down and that SMELL hits you with the wind (a mixture of warm sand, water, ocean air), THAT is the smell of Azuree Soleil.

Longevity is a little light - so you can really overapply this and it won't be too obnoxious (unlike VIW which is STRONG!) or have obnoxious sillage.

Can't say enough.

BTW - this is the Eau Fraiche I'm talking about - did not try the body oil (I have oily skin, so I tend to stay away from body oil products).

And at a price point at about 1/3 of the Creed, this is downright affordable. Kind of surprising that Tom Ford released such an affordable scent considering the last release from him was the Parfum version of Black Orchid (exclusive to Neimans) at $350 for a HALF OUNCE and the new 12 scents he releases this week all start at $175 for the small bottles.
ForTheLoveofMando
"I've had no sales resistance to anything here"

I just bought a 80% full bottle of AMAZE People of the Labyrinths for $129.00 (goes for $165.00 a bottle) off Ebay a few days ago. God I love this scent. I say this about everyone, I KNOW! But this one is one quite remarkable rose/oud scent. Not as great as Montale's Black Aoud, nothing tops that beauty. So glad I have that one to wear and enjoy. I should wear that one for tomorrow night when I see my family since they will be in town tomorrow and I'm off Thursday and Friday, WOOHOO!!! 4 Day weekend ahead!!!!

Zephyr
I really like the scent strips of Tom Ford Black Orchid but need to try it out on my skin before I make any further judgement. Maybe a trip to test it out is in order.
mikeperez23
"That other site..." Armando? What site? I love A.maze too - although when I applied the perfume months ago (from a sample) my chest itched at the end of the day. Strangest thing... and I almost NEVER get an allergic reaction to a fragrance. I didn't care - I loved it and it kinda knocked me for a loop: I got roses and animals (not civet, ANIMALS!) and it lasted for hours. Kind of like holding a bouquet of roses at the circus(!) Quite an experience. I can't imagine owning a bottle, I might overdo it and break my nose with sensory overload (smile). Enjoy it.

As for Black Orchid, Zephyr, yes try it on the skin. I love my decant, but it gets all 'skanky' on me after a couple of hours. I like skank, but some people don't (skank = dirt, mushrooms and/or natural body odor). Again - another fragrance NOT to be taken lightly - a quite serious affair IMO.
lillie
I am resisting to Eau du Soir and No. 19 pure perfume at the moment.
I cannot sleep at night when i think of them. My decants bring mee through, though.

Thinking about Diorella, too. Miss Dior maybe? But in which form? Not sure about that one.

And there is Eau de Givenchy.
Will the green - chypre trip go away or should i invest? Maybe this is my TRUE calling?

My bank account says: hold on, paycheck is coming, soon...

Already went for a big bottle of Vetiver and the new EdT of Le Baiser du dragon (*confess*) which i found both CHEAP on ebay.

I am very curious about Pure Turquoise and Azuree Solieil, i must say. What you're telling here sounds interesting. Wonder if they'll offer it over here.

Lou, beloved-
Far be it from ME to be the great enabler [HAH !], but-
You must !
I'm still smelling it in my hair, from yesterday's spritz over 24 hours ago.
It made me, and others, swoon big-time.
SO velvety, unctuous without weight, clinging without cloying.
Sigh.

Have I succeeded ?

OH.

I did it, and I'll have to wait.
I've been very excessive of late, and c'est tout pour moi, la mauvaise fille mal gardee.

Oh chaya...*sighs*

I'm feeling the need for the following

JAR Shadow
JAR Golconda
JAR Bolt of Lightning

And seeing as how the purchase of just those three would cost me close to $1500, I'm pretty sure I'll have an easy time resisting (read: yeah, like where am I gonna get that cash? lol, the situation is downright laughable right now).

Elsewhere, I really want a bottle of...

Sous le vent
Apres L'Ondee
and all the other Guerlains

AND...
Chergui
Fumerie Turque
Angeliques Sous la Pluie

AND...
any of the Montales
Dorothy's Amber Classique (this one is very doable, though, I'll just have to save for it)
Dzonghka
Dzing
Timbuktu

so much perfume, so little money....
Cathleen56
All of them -- I'm on a no-buying pledge right now, for anything new, that is, for as long as I can stand it. I've gotten some interesting goodies, meanwhile, from my local thrift store, and have collected a few nice samples from stores.
VelvetSky
I'm trying to resist the urge to purchase a couple of Commes des Garcons, specifically:

Lily: A friend gave me a generous sample of this, and I've fallen for it, hard.

Kyoto: I feel that I "need" this for my incense scent collection.

And....

I want a decant of Caron Tubereuse, because I adore it.

Meeee waaaant coooookies!

These Paris visits give one a taste of eternity, as one poet-friend would have it.
It has only been possible to go up and down on the same day for the last decade.
One still has to order a ticket in advance: I wish for the day you can just go at a whim (like we can to Brussels).
We leave 7.36 am, arrive 11.06 am in Paris, get onto the train again at 7.05 pm, to arrive back in The Hague at 10.30 pm... Eight hours in Paris just about suffices - and we do all by foot.
