Can I just say how much i cant stand Oprah right now???? Every second customer in my store wants to sniff SJP bc it was mentioned that she wears it.... Really?! I ask you..do you think one of the richest women in the US is wearing a $62 department store scent?? I HIGHLY DOUBT IT!!! I want to know how much she got paid for promoting it....it was tanking in sales until she mentioned it, now its the hottest fragrance moving....and I dont think it deserves it!!! there were much better launches this season than SJP's....
Ugh! sorry for the rant, but this SA is fed up with SJP's Not So Loveley scent!!! God its DISGUSTING!!!

With apologies to Lovely's fans, I simply can't smell it. (No snickering please.) I mean, I can't smell it. Could be expensive water. But I thought this scent was so popular, already??
It would be fun to look at past lists, to see other recommendations.
This one I liked:

A few years back, I walked into an Origins store (I'd never been in one before) and fell in love with the Ginger Essence Body Souffle. The SA told me they'd just gotten some back in stock after selling out in one afternoon the previous week.
When I asked her what had happened, she said that at about 4-5 o'clock, the store had just flooded with women, all wanting to buy the Ginger Essence Body Souffle. Turns out You-Know-Who had raved about it on her show that day.
Scary.

VERY stupid question I am sure.....but what, (or who) is SJP?
I happen to LOVE Oprah! She is such a wonderful person. She is down to earth, etc. I can't help but LOVE her!
Ya know, with her money, she COULD afford to wear whatever she wanted to wear, but she seems to be very grounded.
Oops...I just realized what SJP was. Sarah Jessica Parker! DUH

I read somewhere that Oprah likes Penhaligon's Lily of the Valley and buys it for her friends. Then I read Luca Turin's review of it, and laughed.
I also heard she like Moynette perfume oil. It seems like she likes lighter, less complex scents.

Oprah used to wear Jo Malone's Grapefruit. Everything Oprah touches turns to gold. She's got the Midas Touch (and the gold to prove it). Do you think poor, unknown authors paid her to promote their books, which then flew off the shelves. If she were a poor nobody local broadcaster, that might be possible, even probable. Oprah doesn't need to be paid to promote anything.
Sounds like Dawn should work at Nordstrom's if she doesn't like making a lot of sales. At least she'd be getting commissions.

I dunno.. why should Oprah bother with hidden sponsorship deals for perfume? She couldn't possibly need more money. She may enjoy having some simple tastes that are visible and accessible.
I can't smell Lovely either, at least not past the initial very faint impression.

Somehow, I find it hard to imagine a woman like Oprah wearing Lovely. However, it is true that she exclaimed "I looooove your perfume!" when Sarah Jessica Parker was a guest at her show.

I was offered a great position there but the commute sucked!
And it's not that I don't like to make sales (I'm extremely good at it, my boss says I could sell a snowball to an eskimo but anyways..) Most of the SJP comissions that I dont get I make up for with a more expensive sale...who wants the commission on a $48.00 SJP when I can get it on a $150 Chanel Parfum? Ha Ha
what I don't like is people who come in and want such-and-such fragrance because so-and-so raved about it... PEOPLE ARE SHEEP...they only want whats new and hot, even when it sucks! they just want to be like everyone else (how boring is that?).... I love the customers who like to try and buy fragrances that they love because of the scent, not because its 'in'.... I like customers who are serious about what they wear, customers that take pride in thier fragrance...
Oh and 9 out of every 10 customers who try SJP's say "I dont know what Oprah was talking about..." most of the customers who are buying it are purchasing without smelling it or buying it for someone who mentioned it but have never tried it... I'm betting that this will be our biggest 'return' scent this year....

I watched a bit of that show and noticed that O just spent a moment on the SJP scent. She off handily said that she NEVER wears perfume... but this one was really nice. Then she offered it to the audience and waited for the sign to go up indicating to the audience to clap hysterically. (By the way, this audience, made up of rescue workers, had their priorities right and did not go as crazy as audiences in the past.)
In any case, it is all product placement and really has nothing to do with what O likes or dislikes anymore.
CFSSDawn , I agree with you... people ARE SHEEP!

Now that makes sense. If you never wore perfume Lovely *would* be nice because it really doesn't smell like much of anything.
The perfect perfume for the non-perfume person.

Mando: EXCELLENT REVIEW!
LOL!!!!I have to call it like I see it. I had smelled this one a month ago when I bought my bottle of Dior Pour Homme and it was so unremarkable of a scent. I thought to myself, "What the heck are they thinking here?!" Plus it doesn't help matters that I think SJP has been way too overexposed for the past few years from her stint on Sex in the City. I don't hate her, no, just think that the other gals on that show really held that show together and gave it the Oomph it was so noted for!
Okay, I'm off my soapbox now....heheheh

Mando, what do you think of Narciso Rodriguez For Her? Lovely is supposed to be almost identical.
Luca Turin just did a review of NR and said, while it wasn't original and didn't advance the art of perfumery, it was well done, and sometimes that's enough.
I think I posted this awhile back. One of the fashion magazines or tabloids did a poll of three celebrity fragrances. One was Brittney Spears Fantasy, the other was JLo's Still, and the third was Lovely. 58+% prefered Fantasy, 36+% prefered Still, and only ~4% liked Lovely. I'm not surprised it was tanking in sales. Oprah really did SJP a big favor. I don't think anyone paid Oprah to promote the fragrance either. Lately Oprah likes to suck up to famous people and name drop them as her friends.

That's so funny that you say that. I had the same reaction to Celine Dion's first fragrance.
I picked up a bottle at the drugstore for my mom because it was on sale. Neither one of us could smell it. It was like spraying on water.

Scent taste aside, I adore Oprah. I really do.
I'm late on her bandwagon too - never watched, nor cared, til a year or two ago. She's a dynamic TV personality if there ever was one. Given her age, who knows how long she'll hang in there. I hope she'll keep on the stage for a l-o-n-g while; daytime TV will be even more forlorn without her.
But wait a minute - perfume!!! What did I see at Sephora this afternoon, prominently displayed by the cash register, but the Grace gift basket mentioned.
Mildly curious - as I've enjoyed Philosophy's body washes in the past - what the heck does "Grace" smell like? Anyone try? Last year I got a triple pack of - hmmph what was it - eggnog, cider, and chocolate body washes. Great fun.

Casaque, Philosophy actually has three "Grace" fragrances: Amazing Grace, Pure Grace, and Baby Grace. I think they're all "shower-clean" scents, sort of along the lines of Gendarme and Carriere.
Funny you should mention the Philosophy body washes, because just today I stopped in Sephora and bought the Cafe au Lait 3-in-1. The coffee scent is delicious; I can't wait to get in the shower. Last year I bought the White Chocolate Hazelnut one and that was yummy, too.

"Lately Oprah likes to suck up to famous people and name drop them as her friends."
I guess you could say the same of every famous person then. Have you ever thought that they WERE her friends? Is she supposed to be friends with the waitress at the truckstop? Who do you think she'd have more in common with? She has old friends whom she's known forever, and new friends, whom she's met through her work. Same as all of us. Politicians "namedrop" their fellow politicians' names because they all work in the same field. Nothing surprising about it.

Nope, I don't get that impression when other famous people mention famous people. There's something "off" and forced about the way Oprah does it. It comes across as name dropping and not as part of some natural flow of conversation. (The only other celebrity I can think of I get that impression from is Dominick Dunne, the author). That's just part of it. She also gushes over every celebrity who comes on her show to the point where it turns me off. I don't have that reaction to other talk show hosts or interviewers, and I didn't have it to her before. I've watched her for years and years and this seems fairly recent. Maybe it's some kind of midlife crisis (hers or mine)? I'll concede I could be wrong because I don't personally know her, but that's my opinion based on what I've seen lately.

She 's such a daytime TV bore! I 'm a new yorker and she 's not my kind of female role model at all LOL
anyways she 's so mainstream and commercial - the wealthiest black woman in the world looked like a stuffed sausage with cheap make up on and old fashioned hairdo the other day on David Letterman.

I have to say...she really didn't look that great on Letterman...something about the dress just didn't compliment her...I've seen her numerous times look Amazing, but I agree that she didn't look so well for Letterman. Maybe it was a rushed day since she went to the Broadway premier of The Color Purple after the taping of Letterman (they tape at 5pm...at least they did a year ago when I had tix to his show)
I used to watch Oprah all the time, but as soon as that QUACK Dr Phil showed up it was Adios to Oprah! Now HE annoys me to no end!!!
BACK TO PERFUME NOW: Just wanted to mention that I've used a few of the Philosophy 3-in-1's... Mimosa is great in the summer... I love Coconut Creme Pie, Apple a Day and Amazing Grace (though it didnt lather as well as the others). I tried Apple Cider for the fall but something about it made my skin react funny...made me itch. The sizes are great too...they last forever! The hard part is picking the next one to try.... I saw the Peppermint one...i think that might be my next choice...
