Everything is covered in a layer of ice and there are lots of cancellations. To make it even worse, another ice storm is expected later. Ugh. I was planning to spend the day with my guy, but he lives 45 minutes away from me and he called me and told me not to risk the drive. :( If I had my Christmas shopping done, I would wrap gifts, but I still have a lot to do. I guess I will maybe bake some Christmas goodies providing we don't lose power. Anyone else contending with old man winter today?
Just posted and I see my topic line has "them" instead of "the" and I can't correct it. Grrr.

Yes, in we live in West Central Missouri and were hit hard last night. Remember "The Ice Storm"? Not quite that bad. We missed church, but got up anyway and in my parka and sweats joined my husband and son in their quest for ice melt. We stocked up on groceries yesterday, and the store was packed.

It's snowing here, but it probably won't stay cold enough to stick. After the flooding we had last week, this is an improvement for alot of people. I really hope things don't turn worse here, because the college is notorious for cancelling and postponing due to weather and if they start messing with the finals schedules, it's really going to screw my week up.

Steady as you go, rosebud, and don't take any unnecessary risks on slippery roads. Your sweetie is right.
Yes, indeedy. Awoke around 8 a.m. to -15°C (5°F) temperatures and an apartment building without heat or hot water. Had to boil water to wash. Called the concièrge, called the landlord. No reply. Went out and came back after three--still no heat or hot water and no reply. The good news is this building retains heat pretty well. The bad news is I was planning to wash my hair this a.m. and so far no go. Ah.... I love winter!

Well it's been raining all day here. The temp will be dropping in a few hours. If things aren't dried up by then, we're certainly in for treacherous driving (and walking) conditions.

It has been miserable all week-end. Many things cancelled in the Kansas City area. I'm staying in and wrapping presents and making cut out Christmas cookies tonight. Also watching the Chiefs get beat by the Denver Broncos. There's been a ton of accidents all over the metro area. Another huge ice mess expected tomorrow & Tuesday.

We slipped and slid all the way from our car through the parking lot to the concert tonight. Nasty stuff out there.

Same general area as Girlpunky, but I'm a little further west and didn't get as much ice on Saturday. I am dreading the next two days though as the forecast sounds terrible and even my small eight mile commute won't be fun. I really hope we don't lose power as we don't have a generator or much firewood right now.

Oh dear Fiveoaks, I hope you have heat and hot water by now! That is terrible. I know it's going to be like that when we arrive as our flight gets in late and we have to get home, turn on the hot water heater, the heat, and unpack the duvet!

It took about twelve hours to get someone to come and when he did, the guy said all he had to do was turn on the switch, which had turned off. C'est la vie. Caz, can you get your friend who lives in the area to turn on the heat & stuff for you during the day?

I actually thought of that - I don't like to impose, but perhaps if he is free he can stop by and at least turn up the heat and flip the circuit breakers to turn on the hot water heater...

While utterly dangerous in many respects, ice storms can be so beautiful if they are followed by a sunny day. Each and every branch of every tree is absolutely luminescent, and if there is a breeze, it sounds like glass rods striking each other.

I have to wait until Monday for the Gas Company to fix my wall heater. I've had no eat this year and it's been getting down to the forties at night. I've been wearing two sweaters and sometimes a quilted vest, as well as hat most of the time. I've been baking more to heat up the place. Just made Baking Illustrated's triple fudgy brownies. At least when you are cold, your body burns more calories!
When I start to feel sorry for myself, I think of the poor midwesterners in below freezing temps with no electricity.
