It is such a lovely surprise to find the tenderness and nobility of these letters. Under the media blare were two kindhearted people, struggling to live good lives and help each other. Thank you for posting this. It's really so different from all the gossip surrounding those people.

Yep, the royal version of Ma and Pa Kettle. I loved those films!

Upper class Brits don't call their fathers Dad. The first time I heard that was years ago when I dated my first Brit. When he referred to Pa, I said, "Where did you grow up? Little House on the Prairie?" It sounded silly with that accent. If anything, I expected him to say Pater! By the way, whoever says Mater and Pater? Was that only in the movies?

I know British public school boys, including an Etonian, but no classical scholars. Just as well. I'd probably have choked on my tea if one had come out with a "Mater" or "Pater."
