I can't believe that the Snowman is 25 years old.
Here is the full length stunning video.

Oh, one of my favorite videos! Gentle, spirited, joyful, with delightful animation and music. I got it for my son when he was just a baby, and I've watched it so many times with him. If this isn't a cure for ennui, I don't know what is!
I've never seen the introduction by David Bowie... mine is introduced by Raymond Briggs.

Thank you Barry,
This is a favorite of mine! I bought the dvd this Christmas and plan to watch it every Christmas with my new grandaughter. We'll start a new family tradition.

To me it is whimsical, sentimental, and pleasantly heart-pangy. To my son when he was 3 years old, it was a nightmare. He ran screaming from the room in complete emotional meltdown. I've never watched it with another kid!

Channel 4 in the UK show it every year and I watch it every time.
That is interesting about the introduction being Mr. Briggs never heard that one we always get David.
Depending on whether I have had a glass of wine, I cry at the end.

I've also never seen the intro by Bowie ;-) I'm another who bought it when Zoe was young and we watched it
many time together (she'll be 21 in Feb).
For some reason, I thought it had been around much longer as I thought
I [b]had seen it as a young adult
and that would have put it at being more like 35 years old (or older). But I believe you if you say it's the silver anniversary.
I also recall reading a memoir by Briggs about his parents and his youth. I'm not sure of the details at this
remove, but it might have been illustrated by him as well and was titled with their first names. I do recall that it was a loving tribute and very evocative ... a charming read.

i got it for my son, too, when he was little. I was saying to my husband this morning that I didn't realize The Snowman was so old --- and then I realized my kid is 21 already! Time flies, it just flies. And this was one of the sweet things I remember about their childhood, among many other sweet things
FWIW, I just asked #1 Son if he remembered The Snowman -- and he doesn't!! LOL Oh well, he's not old enough to be nostalgic, I guess.

Oh, thank you. Thank you!
I love The Snowman - the animation and the music are beautiful. My 4.5 year old son adores the movie. I'm hoping to introduce my younger son to the Snowman as well.
Until seeing your link, I'd not seen the introduction with David Bowie. Thank you!

I've only seen the one with the David Bowie introduction. I didn't know there was another one! I'd much rather have Briggs himself. I always found Bowie jarring in that context.
I did just buy the DVD; guess I should check it out and see who's on there.
A masterpiece, IMO. Haunting. And I can't believe it's 25 years old, either!

I just watched it for the first time and had the exact same reaction as your son. I needed a nice cuppa and a lie down to put me right.

Hey, c'mon, the kid gets a nice scarf out of the deal. Even it did clash with David Bowie's viciously orange hair.

There, there, little one. Let's drink some tea and sing one of our favorite Christmas songs. Tearwater tea.

I much prefer my snowmen to live long and happy lives. They can summer in the North Pole if need be but then I'm a simple soul. This seems more geared toward adults.

Wow--what a coincidence. I just saw this video today for the first time when I happened to be visiting my daughter's school for a holiday party. I had only "read" the book, but the video is soooo lovely. And I was taken by the female vocalist for the theme song. It is gorgeous.

Isn't it? It's by Howard Blake. The singer was boy soprano Aled Jones.

I had never even heard of this! How'd I miss it for 25 years? I just watched it, and it is, indeed, beautiful and touching.
Sadly, I have a 3 year old who cries when anyone sings "The Farmer in the Dell" because she finds the idea of "the cheese stands alone" just so heart-wrenching. She doesn't want the cheese to be lonely. She's a sensitive soul. I think this one would put her over the deep end. LOL.
My 5-year-old would love it, but I think we shall have to wait another year or two, so as not to traumatize her sister!!
Gorgeous. Thanks for posting it!

Awww, that a girl, bless her! I know just how she feels. I used to wonder about The Cheese as a child too. The Gingerbread Man and Humpty Dumpty horrified me and the Simon And Garfunkle song
I Am A Rock UGH! As a little one I worried so about that rock and that island. I could tell they were lying when they said...
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never criesTo this day I try to be kind to rocks...just in case.

Wow, good timing! After having sat through most of the traditional Christmas animations this month, I'd wondered where "That one narrated by David Bowie" was...now I can see it! (For me? Any time I get to see/hear David's voice it's a Good Thing) Thanks so much for the link, Prince!
