Well, you know I'm good at contempt prior to investigation and this is not exception. I have a strong desire not to see this film. It just seems like a terrible idea to have odd choices of actors and actresses play Bob at different points in his life when the man is still alive, for Pete's sake. Plus, the choice of Cate Blanchett just weirds me out. On the other hand...
Has anyone seen this?

Which phase of his life does FullTilt play?

I'm thinking that the trailer with which features Cate Blanchett prominently may be at least part of the catalyst for the comment she got the other day. Honestly, I found Cate to be doing a weird, whiney, pouty thing that didn't remind me of Dylan. I'm hoping that someone who has seen it posts that it's actually really good. Otherwise, it just looks embarrassing from my viewpoint.
I think FTR mainly gets those comparisons because she dresses in the mod style. I don't think those stovepipe pants, nehru jacket and pointy boots really suit her but she likes 'em.

It probably doesn't help that she walks around with that harmonica harness around her neck, either.

Yeah. Good point. She likes to have it handy when inspiration strikes, though.

I always thought it was the scraggly mustache.

Gasp! You swore you wouldn't tell about the mustache!!
I'm dying to see that movie. I love Cate Blanchett and I love Bob Dylan. I was a little weirded out by the trailer, too, but I am so intrigued by the idea of her playing him that I want to see how she does. To me, she did sound/seem a little like him. Although I am no expert on what he was like in real life -- which is probably a good thing.

I agree that she did a good job for someone who, in actuality, is so different in inflection and physical mannerisms. It just wasn't close enough to sell me on it. The reviews I read seem to say that one needs to suspend the desire for the performances to be spot-on and appreciate the feel and style of the movie - that it's not really about them perfectly impersonating Bob. Still, it feels weird to me. Report back if you see it!

I was with you, sharil, the whole concept seemed weird. But I resisted the Scorsese documentary for the same reason, and was completely blown away by that one, can't believe I waited so long to see it. Then again, the documentary had the real Bob in it.

Wasn't that amazing? It really captured a moment in time, and the complexity of the man.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=2lk-GiNQFTUCheck out this montage of Dylan photos set to Diamonds and Rust - there are some photos of Dylan (and Joan Baez) that I've never seen before - very poignant.
