My hairdresser charges $125, which I think is exorbitant. How much is the going rate for highlights?

That's about right. Depends on how many colors you're getting. I used to say I had $200 hair when that's what it cost for 3-color highlights and a trim.

I think mine charges $80. Are you also having a base done, or just highlights? I now get both, but I can't remember how much it is. I've probably blocked it out.
cazaubon
She charges $65 for the base and $125 on top of that for the highlights.

That's nuts.

Of course, prices do go up in some metro areas. You're in San Diego/Montreal, right? Probably more expensive in those places than here.
cazaubon
Yeah, I'm in San Diego. But I think I am going to shop around, to see if I can do better. I love my highlights but $$ are tight.

For me, haircut is $50, single process $65 and partial highlights $95. Total: $210. The norm. The place I go is a salon and day spa.

Also depends what kind of stylist you have. Some places have ranges of stylists - Associate designer, designer, senior designer and master designer and have different prices for each stylists. I've been to different salons and that is the going rate, $200+.

Some places, they charge you of how long your hair is and, this is weird, charge per foil. There are a lot of variables out there.

I pay $65 when she's just coloring all the roots the base color and it runs about $110-115 total if I get base with a handful of chunky highlights.

About $75 and that includes my trim, I have short, thin hair so maybe it would be more if my hair was thicker and longer.

Walmart charges 40 dollars for highlights, 12 dollars for a cut. Some here might turn up their noses at Walmart, but if your money is tight... I like to have mine pulled through the cap. If you have a friend you trust, you can buy a kit at Walmart for about 10 dollars. I know people who do the paint on kind themselves.

$60 Australian for regrowth and hair cut where I come from in Australia. It's a little local salon. They're good, quick, efficient. I walk out of the salon with wet hair, I won't pay for the blowdry.

Because the hair dye is close to my own hair colour I can let it go for 3, sometimes 4 months before getting it done again, but as I go greyer I'm guessing that won't be the case.
PerfumeMe
$125, which is pretty standard here. I only get them every other month, so I don't consider it exorbitant.

I just got partial highlights and it was $110. I know my sister-in-law gets hers done elsewhere and she only pays $110 for partial highlights AND a cut, blowdry. I think I'll go to her place next time.

I've had mine done at the salon in the past and more recently I did my own with L'Oreal's highlight kit.

I love how it turned out. It's not for everyone but I am pretty artistic so I guess that helps.
There's no foiling and the web site has little tutorials on it.
I'll use this product again!

For a haircut and 18 "slices" of highlighting, three colors, I usually pay about $65 plus a twenty percent tip.
But, then, my stylist works out of a very nice salon which is attached to her home, out in the country.
I imagine one day, if she leaves the area or retires, I'll be paying big bucks to have this done, especially since I have it done every seven to eight weeks.

My friend at work pays $80 for cut and highlights (no base color, though). I pay between $17 and $21 for L'Oreal Couleur Experte base color and highlights in Toasted Almond, which I do myself. Since any kind of bleached lightening tends to damage hair if repeated over time, I have been going much more subtle on the highlights lately. I'm very happy with the results because it makes my hair look just like it used to look like before I started going "prematurely" gray!
