Hoarding is "a revolt against the material recklessness of consumerism"??? Not bloody likely. If that were the case, everything would be neatly stacked and packed and there wouldn't be so much of it. These people are sick.
The guy with the books -- not so bad. The lady with the endless empty jars and toilet paper tubes and bottle tops and nearly empty shampoos, lotions, etc. -- MERCY! The fellow whose mother died has lost his mind.

That was my take, too. I whine more than my fair share about our (mostly my husband's) book collection, but being brutally honest I have to admit it wasn't that bad.
That woman with the empty bottles and stuff -- what WERE those white pads with the gray centers? Used eyemakeup remover pads?
