Turn off your lights tonight between 8pm and 9pm in your local time zone.

Thanks for this, Baz.

I logged on this morning and thought there was something wrong with Google--they've gone dark on honor of they day!

I'm in!

We'll be turning off lights too.

Thanks for bringing this to (h)our attention. Earthhour.org isn't able to handle the traffic right now, it seems, but I'll be reading up on it later. Even if we live quite eco-consciously in our household, it does motivate to see which actions deliver exactly what.

Apparently Canada is participating in a big way:

Even on a normal evening I have on a maximum of three light bulbs at a time so I don't think my gesture will make a big dent in lowering energy consumption but I'm doing it in solidarity.

I'm glad to know why Google's background is black. Thanks.

As for me, I believe in making this earth a better place because I have been here and I try to live that way...but global warming is not a concern of mine. I don't mind turning off a few lights, though. It is a good reminder to "waste not".

Catie, your comment reminds me of a comment the other day on the news where a reporter said today it's all about saving the earth, whereas when she was growing up, in her family lights were regularly turned off when not in use to save hard-earned money. Either way, it's a good idea.

Okay - I'm sitting here in the dark ... now what?

I really don't see the good this will do. Turning lights out is one thing but as long as anything is plugged into an electrical socket there is power being drawn not to mention the power surge when all those lights come back on. And for only one hour? Nope I don't buy it.

Laemco, I believe it's meant to a) raise awareness by calling attention to the issue, and b) provide a visible expression of solidarity/support for greener measures throughout the year.

I didn't read any of the press as saying that this hour was going to change the fate of the world by the energy saved.
