Full Version: Michael Franks...
Perfume of Life > A Civilized Perfume Affair > Talk About The Arts

I'm sitting here listening to "I Bought You a Plastic Star For Christmas" by Michael Franks. I have been a major Franks fan since the late 70's, when by chance, I bought a copy of "The Art Of Tea." I've been smitten ever since. I luuuuv his vocal style. Also, he writes most of his own material and a lot of his songs have a quirky, tounge-in-cheek attitiude, which I very much enjoy!

My favorite album is still "The Art of Tea" and favorite Michael Franks' songs are, "Mr. Blue" & "When Sly Calls."

He's so smooooooth...

Any other Michael Franks fans around here?

If not, who is you favorite male vocalist?

I also really like:
Art Garfunkle
Marcos Valle
Pierre Barouh

Gosh, Nubka, I've never heard of him, so I must investigate. Favorite male vocalists include Paulo Conte, Andy Williams, Johnny Cash, Charles Aznavour, Bryan Ferry, Chet Baker and Leonard Cohen, but nothing of his before "I'm Your Man" album, and Nick Drake.

Re: Chet Baker - There was an album reissued two years ago, titled "Chet is Back!" which were his Italian sessions. It includes three extra vocal tracks of him singing in Italian, which make me melt everytime I hear them. Ennio Morricone did the arrangements.

I'm really suprised that nobody so far has heard of Michael Franks! Hasn't anyone here ever heard the late 70's jazz classic, "Popsicle Toes" ??

I love a Japanese pop singer called Hyde. He has a lovely sweet voice with a nice range. I played his record Roentgen for my sister and she got tears in her eyes. So now I know it's not just me.

This "Hyde" sounds interesting...I'd really like to hear some of his music!

I had a roomate who listened to a lot of Michael Franks ("Don't touch that phone, don't touch that phone, don't touch that phone, don't touch that phone...") Can't say I'm a fan, but I've, shall we say, been exposed.

Favorite male vocalist is hard to pin down as there are way too many categories and way too many different sounds. Some I enjoy though:

Al Jarreau
Brandon Boyd
Scott Stapp
Seal
Don Henley
Darmon Meader (New York Voices)
Amr Diab (Egyptian pop star)
David Lee Roth
Prince
Justin Timberlake (no rotten tomatoes! He's quite talented- attitude aside.)
Richard Bona (fabulous bassist/multi musician from Africa- has a voice like silk)
