Full Version: Eva Longoria

Someone enlighten me, please.

Seems like every magazine I pick up has a picture of this woman in it. She seems to make an appearance at every party and premiere. Yeah, I know she's on Desperate Housewives, but honestly, I've never seen her in anything else and from the snippets I've caught of that show, her acting skills are unremarkable. Never heard of her at all before that show.

I've seen her in some cute outfits, but nothing that would make me fall out of my chair. She's a pretty girl, but no prettier than most others.

She must have a helluva publicist, because I swear her mug is everywhere.

What's with this Eva Longoria chick? Why so famous? What am I missing?

p.s. Her basketball playing husband isn't someone on my radar either, but I understand he's good.
isabellabird
Just part of the cult of celebrity? People famous for being famous? That seems to describe about 95% of the quote unquote celebrities we hear about constantly.

Ditto with being confused about this lady's appeal. I think everything about Hollywood is pure spin and publicist froth. There's likely no small amount of posturing for all this too.
The TV ladies I admire never seem to be the stellar apex of admiration and media focus.

Marg Helgenberger (to me) is the most striking, bright, natural beauty on TV. Maybe she's too old for "glitterdom".
rasputin
Eva and hubby live 10 miles away from me.

I know most women do not like Eva. Most of the gals I work with cannot stand her, LOL!! But I think she's very pretty and I like her role as Gabrielle on Desperate Housewives. I think they give her the funniest lines on the show. I won't say she's the greatest actress but she has something that obviously appeals to the public or she would've have been axed long time ago, I'm sure.

But she is everywhere, I agree. She does have one heck of a publicist to get her on every magazine, t.v. gossip show, etc...
GalileosDaughter
I think she's very pretty.

Before she was on Desperate Housewives, she was on a couple of soap operas, and her husband is a legitimate "big deal" in the basketball world, if I understand correctly. She does a lot of charity work, speaks two languages, opened a restaurant.

She seems like a nice person. It's not like she's done nothing to be famous except show her whatevers to the world. She's no Meryl Streep in the acting department, sure, but there are many lesser lights who get more publicity.

Or maybe I just love her because she's Hispanic and reminds me of my sister. smile.gif

Oh good heavens, I cannot stand Eva!! She is so full of herself! She came to a game her husband was playing in the area and all she did was run down the North. Stated she couldn't understand why anyone would live here, etc. She also stated she would never take her husband to meet her grandmother because her family would not approve of her marrying a 'black' man. Well if you love someone enough to marry them, why would that matter?
Since starting on DH, she has begun to believe her own publicity.
VelvetSky
Well...honestly it's not that I don't 'like' her. She's okay I guess. I just think she seems to take every availability to be in the press. Her self-promotion seems to know no bounds.

Why am I even surprised? wink.gif

Do you know what really kills me? When these celebs b*itch and whine about their privacy. Give me a break.

Something about EL's personality reminds me of Kelly Rippa (is that how her name is spelled?), only when I see Rippa...I actually want to cringe. Listening to her ramble on about herself is like biting on tin foil. Eeek!
They are both good cheerleaders for ... themselves. smile.gif

Kelly Rippa gets on my nerves like Kathy Lee Griffin did.

Even Regis Philbin gets on my nerves. They need to put him to pasture!!!

Eva Longoria - a beautiful woman, yes but her personality, I can't deal with it. Maybe it has to do with the role as Gaby on Desperate Housewives. A spoiled rich woman who is obsessed with her looks seemed to carry that persona off-screen as well. Have you seen photos of her hair cut short and gaining weight? It is part of the show in which they fast forward 5 years and Gaby is a mother of 2 chubby toddlers. What are they trying to say, once you have kids, cut your hair short and gain weight, basically, you let yourself go?

It is a very self-absorbed show. It is all about me, me, me. I can't stand watching that show either.

I so agree about Kelly! I thought I disliked Kathy Lee until I heard Miss Ripa!! God, she makes my skin crawl. She hogs the camera, treats people in a condescending way.....oh I could go on and on. Does Regis need the money that bad that he has to put up with the likes of her? I have always liked Regis and I like his wife Joy, but Ripa ruins the show. Now do you want to know what I think of Elisabeth on the View????
GalileosDaughter
Chard, you crack me up!! biggrin.gif

I grew up with taller versions of Eva in my extended family, so I find her charming in a certain screechy familiar way. Actually, I have relatives who put her to shame in the ME!!! department, so Eva is more like the shy and retiring wallflower cousin.

Kelly Ripa - I adored her on Hope and Faith and I still like her when she's not taking herself seriously. Faithy no Likey! is still a catchphrase in the T household. I have not seen the Regis show so I dare not speak to that.

Daytime TV is one of the more compelling reasons that I come to work every day. smile.gif

ROTFLMAO Thomas. High 5!

I know of those people, and I've seen many, many photos of Eva Longoria. I believe there's a factory someplace which turns out tall bony gals with nice square jaws just for TV shows!

Sheesh , do you mind , some of us are trying to drink beverages here! Almost choked to death on that one.

Kathy Lee Griffin was a 10 next to Kelly Rippa! OMG! I couldn't bear to watch that network in the MORNING no less! Regis........sorry guy........he needs some kind of medal for tolerating it!

I am a total NBC person. Well............most of the time. As far as news that is.

I cannot stand Conan. What is with the hair? He's a total geek. I hate that Jay Leno is leaving.
MY ALL TIME FAVE is Johnny Carson though. Nobody can take his place.

Hey T. You have spanish/mexicano blood in your family? Just curious. You had made references to what sounds like it on the board at times and I thought you were all white boy, LOL

Please don't hate me for being picky but I just want to make a small correction. It's not Kathie Lee Griffin, it's Kathie Lee Gifford.

Oh, yeah. Mom's side comes from Spain via Mexico. I'm probably the first generation who doesn't speak fluent Castilian, but in the summertime I still brown up like a nut.

Sounds like my mom's side of the family. Both sides are for me, DUH, with a last name Martinez! LOL!
Us kids, three of us (sister oldest, brother middle and I the youngest), are the first generation that were not taught Spanish as well. I believe my parents were wanting us to not have to go through the discrimination that dealt with growing up as kids themselves. But I always thought it funny that if that's so, "Why call me "Armando" then?" I hated it when I was in claims and did customer service phone calls, when I got a spanish speaking call and I needed an interpreter, the spanish speaker on the other line always wondered why I didn't speak their language. Pretty embarrassing in a strange way.
Oh well, I'm over it now. But man, it sucked getting those calls and getting questioned about my heritage and "Why don't you speak your native tongue?" crap. Yeah and why doesn't the rest of this country speak their own native tongues from wherever else they came from too? Ahhh... things are not always as simple as they seem.

Just wanted to ask, T. Cool, man, I'm not alone!

You're not alone by any stretch - my mom tried to get me speaking Spanish but I rebelled. My cousins did as well, and between the five of us none of us is any good. I fake it well enough to get by in daily transactions (trips to cancun or PV) but actually putting together meaningful conversations is more than I can handle. One day I will learn.

T, I asked my mom why she didn't teach us Spanish as we were kids and she told me she tried to but then just gave up on it. Really no good reason but I guess she wanted us to just assimiliate with all the other kids, I guess.
It's so funny that now she thinks I'm just going to automatically get it, like pick up the language one day! LOL!!
I cracked up when mom told me that. She's really a great woman. I love her to death but I told her, "Mom, I can't learn Spanish like catching a cold". I said it to her in a nice way, no doubt. I know a few words and phrases but not a heck of a lot. My sis knows more than I or my brother. She works for the County of L.A. so it's sort of goes with the territory when she's talking to clients on the phone.

My 3 year old niece has really picked up the language very fast already. My mom looks after my brother's daughter and my mom has the novellas on and stuff. My mom tells me that my 3 yr. old niece really can say phrases and lots in Spanish! I think it's really great that she will know.

Maybe one day I will to, Learn, that is!

Also another funny side note, I have been with Phil now for almost 13 years this upcoming fall. Well, he worked as a high school teacher for many years and retired about almost 5 years ago. Well, guess what he taught at high school? "SPANISH!" LOL!!! My mom would tell him, "You gotta to teach my baby Spanish" LOL!! Phil doesn't teach me, he'll translate for me and he's not even latino. He's full blooded Italian and doesn't even know Italian like I don't know Spanish. His grandparents knew it and I think his mother knows it but doesn't speak it all. She understands it, I believe. Oh well, I'm rambling.

I need to get back to work here! LOL!!
