QUOTE (sillage @ Jul 24 2008, 01:55 AM)

That link takes me to a 1989 article about product placement in Hollywood movies.
Is that what you meant to link to? Cuz I didn't see anything about Auntie Mame . . .

Nathan, read it again. Mention is made of Rosalind Russell dabbing on Charles of the Ritz in Auntie Mame in 1958 -- one of the early examples of product placement.

I'll save the rest of you the bother -- here's the relevant quote:
"Putting products on the big screen is hardly a new pitch. Joan Crawford knocked back Jack Daniel's in Mildred Pierce, and Rosalind Russell dabbed on Charles of the Ritz perfume in Auntie Mame (1958)."That's the only mention of Charles of the Ritz and Auntie Mame in the entire article, so there's no need to waste your time looking for more.
You're welcome.

I was not aware that we could quote even "entire sentences" from web articles in this forum.
I thought we were permitted to cite articles but not actual quotes from the articles.
When I read where a Star or other celebrity uses a fragrance , I like to be able to bookmark/reference a
viable source from which I found the information.
So I cited an article with a Hollywood/fragrance reference as I did not know I was able to quote
the particular sentence.
I enjoyed reading about product placement during the 80's and thought there may be others who do also.

Speaking for myself, I enjoyed the whole article.

Of course you can quote from an article, as long as you give proper credit and/or link to the source. It's part of Fair Use, and is allowed when you want to discuss a subject and the quote is pertinent.
What you aren't allowed to do, however, is just cut and paste an entire article, or even long extended passages, willy nilly.
And I also don't mind reading a 19 year old article about product placement in Hollywood movies, as long as someone tells me in advance that that's where the link is taking me. As it was, I found myself skimming through the whole thing in puzzlement as the main gist of the article didn't fit the title of the thread.
A little explanation is always greatly appreciated when you're linking to an article -- such as, "This article about product placement in the movies mentions the use of Charles of the Ritz in Auntie Mame."
Additional information you can add about any link you provide is always very helpful for readers of any thread.

Thanks Sillage!
Mame also gives Norah Muldoon a huge bottle of Guerlain Eau de Cologne for Christmas. The circular bottle with a golden cone top. I always wondered which exact one it is. Hmm...

In the movie, The Women - 1939, there's the famous perfume department store scene where Rosalind Russell and another gal pal are looking at perfumes and a 30's SA shows them a huge bottle of Shalimar Guerlain as I recall. That was an early product placement scene if I can ever recall one.
