Anyone seen it? I think it is outstanding, an epic, story of Ginghis Han, filmed in the steppes of Kasaxstan and Mongolia, the plot is gripping, scenery is absolutely magnificent, ethnographically fascinating, the film is in Mongolian and dubbed in to English, the director is a very well known in Russia S. Bodrov.
Don't miss it, its another world, another time .

I am SO excited to hear about this! Thanks for posting about it! I just finished reading Genghis - Birth of an Empire by Conn Iggulden, and have started on Genghis - lords of the Bow. My 14yo son has read them too and loved them. Smelka, you are spot on about it being another world! I was continually shocked at the brutality of these Mongols' lives. Just a small example: They would, while out on an expedition, if they lacked water, they would nick a vein in their horse's shoulder and drink the blood. Suck it right off the horse.
I look forward to seeing the movie!

Maybe it is available, I saw it in the movie theatre, just a week ago, it was full house and it is still playing to the full houses, even though it is dubbed, which generally people don't like, forgot to say that it was nominated as the best foreign movie by Academie. Taras Bulba , I saw only episodes of , do you know it was ecranisation of Gogol's classic? As far as Yul Brenner goes, for me he was the most desirable man among all of the Hollywood stars, just could not take my yes of him when I was watching his movies, he had very strong individuality, and presence on the screen, only later I've found out he was Russian, so that did not influence me at all! LOL!

Hi Isabella, what a coincidence that you've just read a book about Ginghis Han!
Thanks for alerting me to these books, I'll seek them out, I'm absolutely sure both you and your son would enjoy the "Mongol', would love to hear your opinion. Also want to mention that the soundtrack is amazing as well. By the way - great that you can share and discuss books with your son!

It will be available on NFlix by October. But I just glanced in the local paper and it's playing at our one and only 'art' house theatre.
Maybe I will go see it this weekend.

I also saw it in what you would call an "independent" cinema, that often screens art and foreign movies, as it happens it is a walking distance from my house.
And Isabella, hope you are reading this, I want to warn you, in case you want to see it with your son - some scenes are very bloody.

Sounds fascinating! But it will probably make it to my small town cineplex--I'll have to look for it to rent, thanks for the heads-up.

Interestingly enough, I beleive about 4 centuries later, a man with the name of Han was recognized as a 'reincarnation' of Ghingus(sp?), and it was this man that began the tradition of the Dalai Lamas, the spiritual leaders of Tibet until the present day. Whether this man was a direct descendant of GH or just a spiritual reincarnation is not known, but the point is that from that name, in whatever form it took, arouse a spiritual tradition that totally transformed Tibetan Buddhism - it just goes to show you that sometimes out of great violence and darkness can arise something truly divine, to me it exemplefies the transformation of dark into light. Just thought this was interesting.
I haven't seen the movie yet..............

I've been wanting to see this one, but it's only playing at the theaters closer into DC. The same with Brideshead Revisited. Nothing but junk out here in the suburbs .
But. . . we are getting closer to getting a big screen tv. Probably a 52" LCD. I know--terribly decadent. But it will do justice to those movies that are best on a big screen.

I wouldn't mind seeing this, but knew it would be gory, like "Elizabeth" and others which I can't watch for this reason.

Well, the movie finally came out on video and I eagerly checked it out and watched it. I must say I was very disappointed. The plot was so different from what I expected, and what I expected was based on the Iggulden books that I mentioned earlier in the thread.
That's what I get for reading books, I suppose...
What's really strange is that I imagine that both the movie and the book were striving to be historically accurate, but they are so different from each other.

I just cued it up on payperview so I'll have an opinion in a couple of hours. He has always fascinated me. I remember some scientists went out to certain outer reaches of the Mongol Empire and took cheek swabs from men who claimed they were descendents of the Mongols -- and they were!

I loved this movie.
The Mongols cut their swath of empire expansion leaving a visible birth mark on progeny.
It's a large intented port wine stain at the base of the spine. I have one.

I'm still waiting for them to come out with Mongol! - the MUSICAL, including the comical hit song "We are Huns, hunting Huns" and the tragic love song "Rider Without a Steed."
