Full Version: Introducing My Gen Y Friend To...
Perfume of Life > A Civilized Perfume Affair > Talk About The Arts

Not sure where this topic really fits into... the arts and / or life in general...

I have a lovely Gen Y work friend (age 21) & just lately I have slowly been introducing her to movies I have on DVD that she would not normally be exposed to or would think to watch.

Some of these have been:
Wive vs Secretary with Jean Harlow & Myrna Loy (1930's)
Mildred Pierece with Joan Crawford & Ann Blyth (1940's)
Picnic At Hanging Rock - an Australian 1970's haunting classic (not sure if it was big outside of Australia)
Gilda with Rita Hayworth (1940's)
Breakfast at Tiffany's (early 60's)

It's gives me a thrill that my friend is really enjoying these movie that I have suggested she might like to see. I thought they would be perhaps too stilted, slow & dated for her. I even though she might think there was too much talking not enough happening. On the contrary!

Today I have loaned her my BBC Tipping the Velvet DVD... it's not old, only a few years old, but again it is not something she would be exposed to watch. I love some of these English period dramas - this one is a riveting & racy romp set in 19th century London's music halls & the Victorian sexual underworld.

For this weekend's viewing I think I might introduce my friend to Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice & perhaps another Joan Crawford movie like Possessed (the one from the 40's)

In the meantime, my friend teaches me how to use bronzer & I have finally learnt how to put on my blush properly thank to her. She also teaches me how to use my mobile - we have to teach me how to text - I must be one of the few people remaining who don't know how to text (I can barely read text speak)!

Anyway - I am having a wonderful time broadening my friends cinema viewing... not to forget the perfume as well..
.
Oh, & by the way - I am a Gen Xer. Does anyone else have friends from another generation they introduce things to - or have been introduced to by someone else?

My children love old movies, I remember that I consciously introduced them to , ' All about Eve,' " Lawrence of Arabia ', Hitchcock movies, ' The King and I', the original " Lolitta" " Judgment in Nuremberg" " The Great Dictator" , they loved and appreciated them very much, and even later films like "Cabaret", "Yesterday , Today and Tomorrow" with Sophia Loren, for example they will miss out on them, if no one will introduce them. I think those films, been classics, should be given the same respect as classics of literature.

Just want to add, what man, no matter how old he is would not love " Gilda' with Rita Hayward, or ' And God Created a Woman' with Brigitte Bardo?

I really like Desk Set with Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Joan Blondell & Gig Young. It's an "oldie," but not melodramatic - a fun movie (I watch it at least once a month!) biggrin.gif

That's one of my absolute favorites, Nubka! The critics say it's not their best movie (Kate and Spencer) but I lurve it! wink.gif
