Though I am not a Trekkie I have come to love sci fi late in life and adore the likes of Westeros series , Tolkien and Mervyn Peake. I have to confess that I was once gifted with and delighted to have The One Ring in sterling silver complete with the Mordor saying etched onto it , much to the sheer mortification of my kids ( well, the eldest , who is of the opinion that this is the sort of thing that a thirty year old virgin male living with his parents gets up to and NOT her mother!). She is also horrified with my anorak style of following Lost the tv series.

I have confessed , your turn ......take your inner Geek out and show him or her off with pride on the interwangle , do not be afraid , it's only us wink.gif

Honey. Lambchop. Snookums. Sister-mine. I have read LoTR probably 20 or more times, and can recite whole sections by heart. I fancied learning Elvish at one time.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost.
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall waken,
A light from the shadows shall spring.
Renewed will be the blade that was broken,
And the crownless again shall be king.

Pssst: and I wanted to marry Aragorn. smile.gif

Well, I luuuuuuv Star Trek (the original series,) Space Ghost Coast to Coast and The Young Ones... blush.gif blush.gif

Am I a Trekkie? Well, I wouldn't wear a Star Trek uniform, slap on Vulcan ears, or go to a convention, but my favorite starship is the Kilngon Bird of Prey, so maybe I am...

I also love Pratchett and Python , is that geeky?

I loved the Young Ones, too, Nubka! I have a tape of it somewhere around here. Neil. Mike. ADRIAN! I loved Adrian. smile.gif

Ah yes, The Young Ones!! My 16 year old daughter's favorite is Vyvian, but I still can't decide between Rik & Neil! (wouldn't you just love to have Neil's recipes for Lentil Nibbles & Henna Dip ?? laugh.gif laugh.gif )
rockinruby
######! It's Vyvian not Adrian, isn't it? Dang it, I need to find that tape and watch. I watched it when they originally aired in the 80s, and not since. How does your daughter know it? Do you have it on tape? Has it been released on DVD? Do any stations air the reruns? Just curious!
éprise de flacons
her geekdom, it was a eldritch horror
the pursuit of which transformed her
(or had she always been this way)
into the object of her own pursuit
and she stared into the mirror
an endless abyss
of otherness
and screamed
(for the poem hadn't nearly enough adjectives, natch)

ok, Lovecraft, right ...

(waves ... a 2x4? a South African lentil? a video nasty? ... at the Young Ones geeks)

Adrian is the first name of the actor who plays Vyvian, so you were close! We have the series on VHS tape, but you can also get it on DVD. My daughter has been watching it since she was about 12, I think (with her parent's discretion on certain episodes, of course! wink.gif )

I love The Young Ones as well. Hopefully admitting this will render me flame-proof for linking you to these, two of my favorite clips EVAH:

Heh, see now I'm far more likely to quote Lock, Stock, and Barrel, the three awesome nogoodniks in Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. Different strokes, you know...

Eureeka Ruby , you just supplied me with some much needed ammo , I love you for it too.

See opening post and Elder child's mortification with my geekiness , well, guess what her fave is , oh yes , she is a Burtonite , at a very very young age she could sniff out a Burton flick at well over a hundred paces and Nightmare is her fave. In fact , the dear child once dreamt up the idea to do Chrimmus , tree and all in full Nightmare mode. The sad part was I could see the fun in it , oh yes , but the rest of the family would've been horrified. Now that she has her own digs I would not be the least bit surprised if this Halloween to Christmas fusion did occur , a la Burton , not one bit.
Noelle
Oh, how about this one....My friend got the idea from the inside of a Bob Dylan CD jacket. We had a costume party a few years back in which we each had to dress as someone featured in a Bob Dylan song. It was great fun.

BTW, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was fun movie. I like the soundtrack even better.

Never a sci-fi fan (real life is plenty bizarre enough for me, as you've seen).

Big Python fan from way back... Even once had an 8X10 glossy signed by the boys in 1973, when Grahame Chapman was still alive.

Big AbFab fan, with quotes at one's fingertips. Is that a gay thing?

I do recall that, in a recent thread, when we were asked "What are you reading this summer?", when others of you listed Rushdie and other lush fiction, I listed PAYPAL FOR DUMMIES and THE FRENCH VERB CONJUGATION BOOK. Très geeky.

I'm the pinup boy for the ENNEAGRAM TYPE FIVE. I'm a MENSAn with a 145 decal on my forehead; does that make me a geek?

The "I'll Clean That Later" Dimension! I've been there numerous times. We've most likely passed each other on the street, probably near the intersection of Pint of Hagen Daz Lane and I'll Have Another Martini Avenue.

And Ruby, I can understand if the whole Sci-Fi/Dr. Who shebang isn't your thing, but David Tenant can be a fair enough choice for a night of mindless entertainment:

I'm not embarrassed for liking Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres - they're fun, creative, intelligent, often visionary and usually have some positive moral lesson, and I can share my love with my hubby and sons, so it's all good.
Twitchly
Another LOTR geek here. I've read the series a couple of times (once aloud to Mr. Twitch, including different voices for all the characters), and I saw "Fellowship of the Ring" FIVE times in the theater.

I can also quote Monty Python skits and thus empty out a party quite quickly.

And I loved the Tom Baker Dr. Who! I loved how they always used the same props for each different planet, just moved the rocks around and such.

I was a huge fan of the "Thomas Covenant, Unbeliever" books.

One of the ways that fans discuss their interest is by holding panel discussions on a particular topic. So, if you want to discuss that particular topic, you can propose it to the convention committee, assuming it's a fan-run convention and not a for-profit one.

And yes, Kirk is the best! laugh.gif

I read the Thomas Covenant books, but never thought very much of them, honestly. I think he was just too damned bitter and damaged for me.

Me, I love The Belgariad and The Mallorean (multiple times for each - Polgara rules) and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.

And, I will be the voice of dissent: Over the years I came to prefer Jean Luc Picard to Kirk. I always felt a little bit guilty about that, but I must be honest with myself. wink.gif I had high hopes for Capt Janeway when it was announced, but she really fell flat.

MY PEOPLE! I have found you at last!

I'm all in with just about all previously mentioned. I have read LOTR every year, all three books, from cover to cover, for at least the past 20 years. I am awaiting "The Hobbit" movie with extreme geeky excitement. I loved Dr. Who back in the 70's in all his cheesy glory, was transfixed by the first Japanese anime that I can remember - Astroboy! - and I own Space Ghost Coast to Coast DVDs AND a Brak t-shirt from Hot Topic. AND I had a blue velour v-neck shirt just like Lt. Uhura's that I actually wore to school back in the day. (I also had a cool Star Trek badge that came in the Star Trek board game, but wisely didn't wear that to school!) I tracked down the Gormenghast Trilogy for Mr. Barry's birthday one year AND went to great trouble to tape the PBS mini-series starring Jonathan Rhys-Myers. Oh, and I have a rather useless library of videotaped episodes of "Lexx", a mindboggling sci-fi series that has to be seen to be believed, and three Lexx T-shirts. And umpteen episodes of "Andromeda", another sci-fi series about beautiful people in space and starring the divine Kevin Sorbo in nifty leather outfits. biggrin.gif
