I haven’t been excited by Gourmet lately, but our office just received the January 2006 issue and it’s excellent. It’s their 65th anniversary issue, and they have 65 of their best recipes (one from each year) since 1941. There are some familiar classics like Duck a L’Orange and Steak au Poivre, but also included are recipes for “Cowboy Christmas Breakfast” which is a sausage, scallion and cheddar bread pudding and “Bobotie,” a South African lamb meatloaf, and “Drunkard’s soup with egg barley” from Hungary, which is supposed to cure hangovers. This issue is definitely a keeper, and may cause a slump in cookbook sales in 2006 because it’s that good.
They posted the Cowboy Christmas Breakfast on their website, so here it is.
