I spotted this on another board and thought I'd pass it along:

SLUGS AND SNAILS DON'T LIKE GARLIC!

I found the idea from the keeper of the national collection of crocosmeas. He also grew garlic. He boiled up the leaves and watered his plants with the garlic 'juice'. No slugs or snails!

I don't grow garlic so mixed up garlic granules in the watering can and used that! The slugs just turn away and remain unharmed, as do the plants.

This is much better than those ghastly blue pellets. No dead slugs and they remain safe for birds, hedgehogs and frogs to eat.

Be careful if you are watering that on plants - some plants don't like garlic either! But it is a useful tip.

My husband and I are in the process of buying a new house and it has enough space for a flower garden and a veggie garden, so I've been reading up on this. Apparently roses and garlic are really good to grow together - the garlic keeps aphids away, and encourages the roses to have a stronger scent. Raspberries benefit from garlic as well, but peas and beans don't like having garlic near them. I don't know if that applies to garlic water, or just to actual growing garlic, but it was mentioned in the book we bought.

Growing plants is so much more complicated than I had realised!

Sprinkle kelp powder around the base of all your seedlings, slugs hate it and plants loves it. I would love to get back into gardening but we live in the City and our garden doesn't get a lot of light as it is over hung with huge trees. More of a natural woodland environment. I love plants and yes I agree gardening is complicated, it's so easy to undo all you hard work.

That's a good one about the roses, I'll have to remember that! Thanks.
