Specially-grown fruits in Japan are sold for ridiculous amounts of money. They're more for showing off and gift-giving than for eating.

I think they sell strawberries for a dollar a piece or something like that. Crazy. But apparently they eat a lot of watermelon. At leat in all the tv-shows and magazines I've seen. And doramas.

I am always amazed at the quality of fruit in Japan, in department store food departments (usually in the basement) I always wonder around the fruit section and marvel at the prices. These divine specimins are carefully selected, taken to a special conter and gift wrapped beautifully, to be presented as presents. Being on expenses, when working in Japan I have felt extremely decadent when actually buying these specimins to eat...a rare treat and they are actually delicious. If you go to a 'normal' sidewalk store fruit is incredibly cheap and just as good quality (nothing is ever bad quality in Japan), although not quite as pristine and huge....presentation plays a major part. Japan is all about image.
