In Pictures: 10 Surprising Superfoods

One thing I'm very happy about: Finally, black tea is vindicated!

I eat all of them, except wasabi. I have no reason to eat it. I don't think I saw salmon on that list. They are always changing the bloody list. Just eat a variety of foods, avoid fake foods like hydrogentated fats (shortening), processed foods and corn syrup, and you'll be just fine.

I agree completely with PerfumeMe. Variety, moderation, and avoiding the processed junk that's added is all that's needed.

I don't know if it's on the list (didn't look because a PM said "They are always changing the bloody list"), but years ago coffee was supposed to cause cancer, disembowel you, and leech away your bones. Now, there are a bunch of studies showing how coffee is good for you. Ditto butter. Ditto eggs.

To all of which I politely say: Sod off!

I'd rather listen to what my body tells me I need than listen to some "expert(s)" tell me what I need. But I've also been a long term believer in eating locally and seasonally (something that's starting to catch on). I love strawberries. But I don't need them all year round. Instead of being the wonderful, fresh, and healthy treat they are, they just become another year-round commodity. Like Oreos.

Yup to both posts above! (Except I do eat wasabi on sushi.) biggrin.gif

on salmon sushi!

Well, I drink black tea (at least two cups) every day, and 'consume' wild blueberries every day as well, either as a snack in a bowl or in a soy milk smoothie.
I also have at least three egg white omelets -- with just a touch of yolk -- every week.
And I can eat wasabi like no one's business. LOVE it. Just off a knife. LOL
Of course we use lots of tomato paste, too.
I try to eat ultra-healthy foods. The ones I've posted about are just favorite foods, period.

Catherine, salmon sushi, to be sure! biggrin.gif About salmon, do we prefer our salmon with mercury (wild) or PCBs (farmed)? Aaaaaarrrrrggghhhh! Truth is I do eat salmon from time to time despite these warnings from the other side of the coin.

Catie, righto. That's what I like about this particular list. It contains normal healthy foods rather than having to go out and find something exotic in a specialty store.

Yay, I already eat a lot of these. Black tea is very good for you, lots of antioxidants.

I eat most of those often, but when blueberries are back to $4 and up for a measly 1 cup container, I turn my attention to grapefruits, pineapple, Northern spy apples, quince, etc...

I'm also into all shades of chocolate and usually don't like to use wasabi on sushi... because I like to taste the fish. Sometimes I don't even use soy sauce, or I just brush the tiniest drop on with my chopstick. Wasabi on a rye roast beef sandwich on the other hand = heaven.
SandraL
I eat all of those things, but not all the time.

I'm not sure what I think of the inclusion of wasabi on the list.

As I understand it, most of the "wasabi" sold in the US is just horseradish, with green food coloring. Actual wasabi is a different plant, so I have to wonder which one they consider a superfood.

I've had some frozen treats made with AÇAI BERRY as well as a fruit drink. Very tart and tasty and yummy blackcurrant sort of taste... with a curious "cinnamon" nuance to it...

The box said the AÇAI contains many, many times the antioxidants of blueberries...

What gets me is you read all these articles, and they say you should have 1 serving of this a day, 1 serving of that, etc. of all of these superfoods. Uh, if I did that, that's all I'd be eating is these servings of miscellaneous superfoods, and no real meals!

So I just try to eat a fruit a day, and some kind of protein, complex carbohydrates, and 2 cups of black tea. Oh, and dark chocolate of course - a day without chocolate is a day without sunshine!

I just bought a big bar of 70% chocolate yesterday--for medicinal purposes only, you understand... laugh.gif

Actual wasabi's not reasonable superfood. It's extremely expensive, which explains why so many low-mid range sushi restaurant serve the green paste, and not the real thing. I adore sushi myself but have never had the privilege of tasting real wasabi.

I eat almost all of them on a regular basis. I also avoid the bad stuff. I think if we don't it cancels out the effects of eating the good stuff. I drink organic black tea. Wish I could get organic raw milk. We can only get organic pasteurized here. I don't drink shop bought juices because they are useless pasteurized. When I was a child my mother made an effort to find a supply of raw milk for the family and I am really grateful for that.
