Along with COCA-COLA, potato chips (always unflavored please!) remain some of my favorite junkfoods/comfort foods...
I dunno, I really like the CAPE CODS, even though they have been criticized here...

I am equal opportunity with potato chips. I have my preferences, but I don't think they make one that I don't like. Favorite is probably Tim's Cascade Sea Salt and Vinegar or just the plain Tim's. Super thick and crrrunchy!

I like Utz brand. I'm a fan of their vinegar and salt chips, although my husband and kids say they smell like feet. I have to eat them alone, away from their delicate sensibilities.

Like Sharil said, I don't think a potato chip has ever been made that I didn't like! I miss them so much, too. My favorites when I could eat 'em were the Lay's plain. Mmmm......tasty!

I like them to be a little darker than usual. Mmmmmm.
Cape Cod makes a chip like that (dark russet, or something like that) where the whole bagful is extra dark. When I discovered this, I had to restrain myself from eating the whole bag in one sitting.

Should NOT have read this thread today - just had some w/my lunch!
I guess I'm in the "greasy and brittle" set - my favorite (when we had them back East) were Wise! But, catch me on the right pms swing and any chip will do!

My favorite is "Hawaiian Kettle Style Potato chips" which I can only find at California grocery stores, but other kettle chip brands are similar. I tried these in my first trip to the US in the late 1970s, and with that and the whole milk, I asked my mom, "We'll be moving here eventually, yes?"
I'm not crazy about the Lays which I find too thin, but I'm happy to eat them alongside when a tuna salad sandwich or a BLT.
I also like highly processed potato chips like Pringles.

We're supposed to restrain ourselves? Suddenly, the fact that I exercise plenty and don't lose any weight is starting to crystalize. LOL

Ch'yeah...with me chips/restraint do not co-exist. Open bag = empty bag. I try not to buy them too often!

Only know Lay's from the market I live in. There were limited edition Lay's Wasabi chips that were AMAZING. I was stockpiling them. Do they have Miss Vickie's in the US? They're kettle-style. The lime and pepper is excellent.

For sentimental reasons, Old Dutch chips in the salt & vinegar and ketchup flavours are my favorites, but I also enjoy Lays BBQ and Doritos in the nacho cheese and cool ranch flavours too. Miss Vickie's Jalapeno flavour are my BF's favourites.

My favorite potato chips were a local brand near where I grew up. Recently, it occurred to me to search the web to see if they were still around (technology is great - when you remember to use it). And they are!
Ballreich's potato chips are fantastic (the marcelled). They haven't changed at all. Potatoes, fat/lard, salt - that's the entirety of the ingredients. They're light and crisp, yet hearty enough to handle a dollop of onion dip. A big dollop!
I also ordered a bag of their BBQ chips. I always remembered BBQ chips having a burn to them as a kid. I figured that I didn't get the burn any more due to a more mature palate. I was wrong. Their BBQ chips do have a burn to them. Not "sweet bbq" like many out there, not jalapeno like the rest. I'm sure it's some chemical concoction involving asbestos, lye, and dirt from Three-Mile Island. But I don't care. They're bbq chips like I remember.
Now, go buy a bag! If you don't live in NW Ohio, you can buy'em online.

I'm with rasputin -- unflavored, always, and Cape Cod or any other hard, translucent, brittle kind are the best, IMO. Kettle brand is good. I feel fortunate that I don't crave chips very often, though.

I support Sharil in her Tim's Sea Salt & Vinegar ways -- dear lord, but those things are delicious.
I also really like Terra Chips:

I love Lay's, and the ruffles-type for dipping. A current late-night snack (usually 11:00 p.m.) that I'm beginning to worry about is sitting down in front of the TV with a bag of Lay's and an open container of sour cream. Automatic: pull out chip, dip in sour cream, place in mouth, crunch and enjoy. That's enough. No, think I'll have one more, that one was sooo good. Dip, crunch, mmmmmm. Just one more.
My mother, too, had Charles Chips delivered when I was a kid. My parents were fairly frugal, so it's funny that they went for this.

Oh, I love potato chips so much! I went to high school for one year in Braintree, MA. The high school was near a potato chip factory. When we went outside for gym, we could smell potato chips

. It was pure heaven. A
A few years ago I developed an auto-immune disease (Sjogren's Syndrome) which causes very severe dry mouth so I can no longer eat regular chips. I can have low salt chips which are pretty good. No flavors, just plain and with less salt. Yum!

I haven't had chips for a long time. These are my favorites.
For transparent, crispy, occasional burnt edges and bubbles, Wise.
For flavored chips, Utz crab chips.
For rippled, Lays they're nice and potatoey.
Mmmmmmmmm, chips.

I haven't eaten potato chips for awhile, but I do like Terra Chips and Cape Cod chips. There is a brand of potato chips that I've only seen in this area--Middlesworth. When I first came to the area, to attend college, I thought that Middlesworth potato chips (plain) were the best I had ever had. Fast forward over 30 years, and I send them (or bring them) to my son in Vermont, only he and his friends love Middlesworth Barbeque chips. When my second son went to college in Kutztown, just 90 minutes away, he'd come home on a weekend, and take back lots of Middlesworth Barbeque chips, because everybody loved them, and they couldn't get them in Kutztown. Now that he has just started law school in Pittsburgh, I'm wondering if he'll find them there. If not, we'll deliver them in a couple of weeks, when we visit him.
So....were I a potato chip fan, I'd probably have Middlesworth on my list of favorites.

I liked Wise too for the same reasons but sometimes I felt they were a little greasy and they were so crispy and of course I'd eat them with such gusto that the roof of my mouth would get kind of sore!

I am not a potato chip person, but, for some reason I'm addicted to Kettle Black Bean chips which you can buy at Whole Foods. They have a garlic/oniony flavor that is just awesome. And then, just last week at a Souther Living Decor Party I tried some Tostitoes Multi-Grain chips--almost as good as the Black Bean chips.
Yum!!!

Zapp's are the best potato chip. No contest. I like the plain, but the jalapeno, sour cream/onion and other flavours are great as well. Not too expensive to order either.

My grandmother did , too, back in the late-60's and early-1970's. Hard to believe we Americans ate so many potato chips back then, but I guess we sure did. She'd order, per week, a big canister of the rippled and a big can of the plain and a big can of the barbecue.
Truly this were "abundance", Texas-style.

I remember, do you?, when guacamole dip was a relatively new exciting discovery for suburbanites....

Dave, I'm still as excited as I ever was about guacamole dip! And guess what I take to nearly every function that requires an hors d'oeuvre? It's either deviled eggs or artichoke dip (the one with 3 ingredients: artichoke hearts, parmesan cheese, and boocoos d'mayonnaise). I shudder to think what Paul Fussell would say.
Then again, he might pronounce me an "X" person and take me unto his bosom.

Yup, them's the ones. My favourite too, A!

While Cape Cod did not get a very good rating in the original article, they seem pretty favoured here--with good reason, I might add.
