Full Version: What Food Do You Love That You Simply Don't Eat Anymore?
Perfume of Life > A Civilized Perfume Affair > Talk About Food

It could be for any reason--perhaps you developed allergies, perhaps you can't control yourself when you have it in the house. Maybe it's like crack--one taste and it's all over. tongue.gif

There are several foods that I adore that I just don't eat anymore. One of my faves: Fritos and clam dip. My mother used to have this at every party she gave, and I lurve it like I lurve few things on this earth. I could seriously eat an entire bag of Fritos Scoops and a whole bowl of clam dip at a sitting. the combination of flavors in this is just hea-ven-ly. I cannot control myself around this stuff.

Needless to say, neither of these things has crossed my lips in years.

Another thing: full fat cheese. I made the switch years ago to fat free cheese slices, and I eat them every day. (I'm part mouse, I think.) I just don't buy full fat cheese of any sort ever, despite getting a bit of a jones for Havarti and Pepperidge Farm crackers each year around Christmas. If I don't buy it, I don't eat it, so I don't keep it in the house. I am not a person of moderation, unfortunately--I admire people who can stop at one cookie or two chips. I am not one of them. sad.gif

What haven't you eaten in years?
mrs veneering
Its not that I have not eaten it in years but Shrimp seems to be giving me hives of late , and this is a new one on me , I have been eating this my whole life with no problems.

This is one of my favourite all time foods and I am gutted that I might not be able to eat this again sad.gif

Barbecue pork rinds
rasputin
Coffee, in the last few years, has started giving me frightful heartburn. So much so, that I have to down an antacid at the same time I intend to have a cup!

I really have no special reason for not eating the barbecue pork rinds, they are just not as appealing to me as they used to be.

That's funny, considering in the past few years I've increased my coffee consumption from none at all to 4-5 cups a day laugh.gif

And as for foods I don't eat anymore...meat. I was never a big meat eater, went vegetarian for 5 years, came back to the dark side a few years back, but in the past year I've almost stopped eating meat completely. I wouldn't call myself a vegetarian, just to give myself the option when it comes down to eating it, but I just don't eat it anymore. I love me a good piece of steak on occasion, though.

I cannot believe I forgot to mention pork , gave it up back in 2004 for the sake of convenience , health and mostly out of consideration for himself who keeps halal, my call , my choice, but bacon , torresmos and bifana are sorely missed.

What are these foods, Miz Vee?

Corn. Pasta made of wheat. sad.gif

Commiserations about the coffee, rasputin!

Anything that would mean I'd have to have the doors in my house widened.

This includes cheese, all the really good European ones: Camembert, Stilton, Brie, full-fat goat cheeses, Raclette, you name it. Our farmers market has a huge selection. I just have to turn my head and walk on by. Once in a while, though, I will indulge in a little bit at a party or other event.

Full-fat ice cream, especially the triple-chocolate kind.

Chips. Generally, not worth the calories.

English double cream; creme fraiche. Oh dear, I seem to be drooling.
Colonia
Sadly, I gag on fat-free cheese. Maybe because even the alternatively "flavored" ones are still the consistency of American cheese which, as far as I'm concerned, is an imitation cheese product. That being said, if you can find Cabot's 75% fat-free cheddar, do try it. They also have a 50% fat-free version. Both of them are
really quite good.

I rarely eat ice cream, cakes, cookies, chips or nuts. All are serious binge triggers for me. (I do eat peanut butter (too much) since a pb sammy is so easy to take for lunch or for when even the microwave is too much trouble. I could eat a jar a day and never tire of it - at least I think I could.)

Potatoe Chips!
Full fat everything.
Fried chicken
Fried seafood from the beach in N.C. or S.C.
Ice cream.
French fries
Fried onion rings
All the GOOD STUFF!

Now I eat other good stuff.
Anything Italian with pasta I love.
But.........now I eat a lot of fish, chicken, veggies etc. Better for me but every once in awhile............ya gotta do some of the sinful stuff from the past.
GalileosDaughter
As a teenager, I could eat a hamburger, fries and a chocolate shake. In one sitting!

Now, I can one of those. Per week. dry.gif

If I love it, I'll eat. Just not so much of it. Or if I eat a lot of it, I try to eat less of something else. I don't always succeed but I try!

Calve's liver. Back when I was very young, I developed a liking for thinly sliced calves liver lightly floured and sauteed in a Venetian style in butter and olive oil with browned onions. In fact when I was a kid, even Morrison's cafeterias had decent calves liver. But there got to be a point around 1980 when the quality of calve's liver declined or else I quit liking it.

Torresmos are chunks of pork which have been marinated in wine/garlic/hot pepper mixture and fried or roasted , this can be done with ribs or chunks of shoulder.

The bifana is a cutlet of boneless porkchop or loin , using much the same marinade or seasonings as above and grilled or pan fried , served on a crusty roll with sauteed onions and hot peppers. I often will sub fire roasted red peppers for the hot pepper rings. This is considered the ultimate barfood and comfort food. There seems to be a version using rhubarb chutney flying about the web , this is an abomination and no right minded Azorean would condone it , fact, I threw up a little in mouth when I clapped eyes on the recipe. There is also a version called a Prego a Bife wich uses steak instead , and since going halal I have subbed turkey breast for pork.

I know! you have to pull something out of the freezer, read the instructions, probably pierce the film a few times.... Too much effort, and I mean that sincerely.

It's why I passed up on the Stouffer's tonight in favor of Brie on crackers, to the detriment of my waistline to be sure.

Beer...love it but causes health problems for me, actually has similar problems for a lot of women. I "sin" occasionally but it is now on my s**t list.

I used to eat bacon sandwiches, several at a time. About 6 years ago, I took a temporary job a at catering company and I spent 10 hours a day for 2 weeks cooking and serving mostly bacon.
I could not stand to even smell it for years.

I used to be addicted to bacon as well and I got over that addiction by becoming a short order cook .... it does become a stench after a while and the feel of grease permeating everything puts one off as well.
rococo
Ben and Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio ice cream. I can eat an entire pint, by myself, without even giving it much thought. Since I've read the nutrition profile and realized how many calories are in it, I never let myself indulge.

If I lived near an ice cream parlor and could indulge in one (and only one) scoop, I'd have it, but I really can't resist it if it's in the freezer.
cazaubon
Popcorn - many years ago, I ate a bunch of popcorn and that night came down with the stomach flu. I can't bear to eat it any more after that association.
sharilstuff
Fries. I never, ever order fries with anything.
Goldengirl52
I don't eat alot of things that I love, but not because I have banned them from my list of things to eat. In fact, the only foods that I would not eat are foods that I feel an intense dislike for (mayonaise, eggs (generally speaking),chicken wings, and ham).

I guess I haven't had waffles for a long time, but I don't like waffles for breakfast. I do like waffles for dessert, or I'd even eat them for dinner.

So basically, there is nothing that I love that I don't eat. If I haven't eaten something in years, it's just because the opportunity hasn't presented itself. But if put in front of me, I'd eat just about anything.

My dream is to open a can of sweet condensed milk and eat it with a spoon, I think I could eat half of the tin at once, it is probably 15 years since I had at least one spoon, but the dream is still there!

Mrs v, are these by any chance frozen shrimp? The reason I ask is I noticed on the packages that frozen shrimp have some preservatives in there with funny names. Could it be additives used in processing that are causing the problem?

I don't eat cookies any more, or hardly ever. The only time I eat them is if I can find some made only with butter and then I need to go easy because of the butter. I used to like a cookie or two for dessert and had some kind of cookies on hand regularly. But then I noticed they are almost all made with hydrogenated fats and other ingredients I don't think are healthy, so goodbye cookies.

I might look into that FiveO , reactions have varied in the past and I have blamed wine (that the shrimps was cooked in) or iodine.

I try to avoid buying:

potato chips
pistachios
dulce de leche ice cream

because I have *zero* self control. Instead, I will buy Doritos for Mr. Sali (I don't like them). A 'handful' of pistachios from the bulk section at a time. Other flavors of ice cream instead.

As a little boy I amazed adults by loving tinned oysters and tinned sardines.

Now just the thought makes me want to kotch.

I used to love seafood in general, now I can take-it-or-leave-it.

I gave up all fried foods. Oh, how I love fried chicken! I also gave up bread products, but I don't miss them so much.

Veal, for humane reasons. Of course if you (or I) start down that road, you come across many more meat/poultry products that should be given up as well. But so far, it's only veal for me.
