Being confused by all the choices available, I am after recommendations on fragrances that I may where out to dinner and to church on weekends. Having very little dress sense, I need all the help that you may muster.

My wife wears Estee' Lauder Beautiful products. I would wish for suggestions that would compliment and not over-power her perfume.

Age 42 (me).

Thank-you,

Paul.
Prince Barry
Seeing as it's hot 'down under' at the moment, I would suggest something like Annick Goutal's Eau d'Hadrien. It's a nice and fresh citrussy fragrance.

If it's available in Australia, I would also take a sniff of the fairly new Dior Homme. It's a very dressed up kind of fragrance, the type that a 'Gentleman' would wear.

Welcome to POL!

Yes welcome! I'm a recent arrival too. Can I second Dior Homme and suggest also you might like to try something classic and clean like Eau Sauvage.
Accolon
Welcome Bassman!
I too recommend Dior Homme and Eau Sauvage and will add Bulgari Pour Homme. All three are classy scents that won't overwhelm in any situation.

Thank you for your reply gents. I will have a look for these sents the next time I am out. I am curious to here from some of the ladies.

Paul.

Lady speaking: I second the ones that have been suggested by the gentlemen so far. Also, Estée Lauder has some men's fragrances and some of them are meant to complement the women's fragrances. Maybe one of the POL users of the Lauder men's scents will chime in on that or maybe the local Lauder rep could suggest a men's scent that would go well alongside Beautiful.

By the way, Paul, welcome to POL!

Hello Bassman - there are so many delightful fragrances for you to try! Where to start is the problem. Sadly, I don't the perfume range in Australia is that eclectic.

Anyway, for starters let me suggest 4 fragrances for you to try:
L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme - Guerlain

Eau d'Hadrien by Annick Goutal (as per Prince Barry's suggestion)

AND Dior Homme by Christian Dior ( I have not seen it in the stores as yet, but it can only be a matter of time - I smelt it at the airport & it is AMAZING!!!)

Very Irrésistible for men - Givenchy

also, when shopping or browsing in the stores - don't be shy - do ask for samples to try at home

Welcome Bassman! My favorites on my BF are Fahrenheit and Joop. I think the key is not to overapply - I wouldn't worry about "clashing" with your wife's perfume as long as you apply yours discreetly.
Le 3eme Homme
Welcome! Of the Lauder's I think Intuition for Men is the best, while the eponymous Lauder for Men has some of the character of Eau Sauvage suggested above. The Aramis line complements the EL line too, and of those I think Tuscany is the classic. J~H~L is a nice spicy one if you like that in a fragrance.

I finally had a chance to sample Dior Homme this weekend and disappointingly found it nothing special to my nose. If you give a hint more of what you want to accomplish with your fragrance, and some scents that you find pleasant, we can give you some more tailored advice, rather than just what we like.

As far as EL fragrances go, and one that may compliment Beautiful, I quite like Pleasures for men (richer and deeper than the female version).

Others have mentioned Bulgari pour homme, and it's a favorite of mine as well.

I am loving Gucci Rush Men...it is very cedar and light great for warm weather (from what i remember of warm weather, living in Alaska!)
Bonski
I second Very Irrésistible for men - Givenchy
Jeffery
Verry Irresistible is *VERY* good, as others have already stated. I like it a LOT. In fact, I think it's what the new Prada for Men should smell like since it reminds me a lot of Prada for Women to a degree.

Very nice scent.

Another I'd HIGHILY recommend... Chic for Men by Carolina Herrera. Notes of watermelon, suede, black pepper oil and Virginia cedarwood mingle amongst each other all day long. The really neat aspect of it is the fruity notes, such as the watermelon, pop out throughout the day at various times, and then go back into hiding.

When you least expect it, BAM, it hits you again... a very well-crafted fragrance.

Hit by a watermelon unexpectedly any time during the day--hmmmm... a truly unique perfume experience! LOL!
Bvlgari BLV
would recommend L'Instant pour homme (Guerlain)

Welcome.

I love Vetiver by Guerlain. I wear it myself sometimes, but I especially like for my husband to wear it. It smells woodsy and earthy and has loads of understated class.
bergamot
Welcome to POL! I'd like to put in a good word for two of my favorites, both of which I wear but which I think were designed for the fellows: Lorenzo Villoresi Vetiver (starts smoky and green and ends clean and soapy, very long-lasting) and L'Artisan Parfumeur Mechant Loup (hazelnut, sweet coffee, and sun-warmed wood).
Muzot
Gosh, I'll have to third Bulgari Pour Homme; It's subtle and refreshing and fantastic in hot weather.
I really feel for you pour guys sweltering in 40+ Celsius right now!
...other than that I'd check out some of the real classics for men, starting with house of Guerlain...
Another one I particularly like (and it's way less pricey) is Crabtree & Evelyn's Mysore Santal, if they still sell it. (shop used to be in Centrepoint mall)
It has an elephant on the bottle, and is unisex. Very classy - and discreet.
A gentleman can't really go wrong with a good sandalwood IMO.
fentontfox
hi being the same age i would recommend if you can get hold of them aqua di parma either the original or the colonia assoluta ideal for a hot dry climate
Muzot
Actually I emailed Crabtree & Evelyn to see if their current Sandalwood is the same as their old Mysore Sandal and they said the formula has changed :(
Let us know how you get on, won't you Paul?
Jicky
Welcome Bassman from a fellow Aussie from Brisbane. As a female who wears a number of Estee Lauder scents, I find they are actually all fairly strong, so I don't think you will overpower your wife at all.

I will simply recommend a favourite of mine easily available in Australia.

Fahrenheit by Christian Dior.

Lovely to see you here.
Anna
Hi and welcome!
You've got some really good advice here :)
I second Dior Homme, very elegant, dressy and attractive. I also really like Pleasures for men, Eau savage and Chic for men.
Santemon
Hi, another fellow Aussie here! Many fine scents recommended above. Not sure whether you're in Melbourne, but you might be interested in going to the places below to try some more interesting niche fragrances (but be sure to take lots of cash or credit cards with you!).
Ludlows in the City - full range of Trumpers fragrances - try their Sandalwood!
DNA Body Boutique in the GPO on Bourke St Mall - just walk in and try out whatever you fancy!
Harrolds - Lorenzo Villoresi (try Piper Nigrum, Yerbamate and their Sandalo) as well as Acqua di Parma.
Happy hunting!

Sante.
Catherine Fraser
guerlain Heritage and always Hermes l'Orange Vert, I love this one on men...sheer enough that you smell the fragrance of the individual, complex enough to blend well with everything.

Dear fragrant friends,

Thank you all so very much for your replies and advise. I am touched, there where so many of you.

I have copied you replies to a word document, which will be condensed into a shopping 'wish list', depending on availability. (My local, around hour or so east of Melbourne. Dandenong Ranges for those who enquired).

"What am I after?" was one reply. I really do not know, though having given the matter more thought:

1. Yes our church can heat up during summer, though we also experience some very cold and damp weather during winter (please read into this lots rain, trees and lichen). Our music is upbeat "Hillsong" predominately, so I am after something not boring, different, refreshing and inviting. After an hour under the spotlights, perspiration can be an issue. Yet a fragrance appropriate for the environment.

2. When I am at home (my job takes me away), I enjoy massaging my wife with Estee' Lauder Beautiful Body Creme. Neck to ankle (both sides), extravagant maybe, my wish is for her to feel special. Estee' also have a Pedi cream for the feet and hands, it is with this that I start and then finish with the body butter/creme. Afterwards, I enjoy falling asleep, intoxicated by her perfume as we lay together in bed or cuddle on the sofa after a glass of wine. I feel it would be nice if I could have a fragrance that would leave her with the same effect when we go out or meet again after my return work. Hence my interest in what the ladies like.

This is a 'confidence' of love I share with you, not lust.

Thank you again for your replies and I apologise for not replying sooner. We have been away over the Christmas break.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All.

:)
rita
I would second Joop!. One of my favorites for men but must be careful not to put on too much.
