OK I am in love wub.gif

This new product from Avon is basically a primer with sunscreen (although it is not marketed as a primer, that is, the word primer is not used; it's called a 'face perfector') - I'd tried another primer once before and didn't like it too much, but I really like this one. And I have found it controls shine and with some powder on top it gives a very natural look, colorless and not foundation-y at all. SPF 20 too!!! which I like and it's only $10 ($7.99 promotion right now on the site). I will definitely be buying this one again. Anyone else tried it?

Got mine about 2 weeks ago. I also love it. I use it as a primer too. I think it really minimizes pores and helps even out skin tone. I have some ruddiness around my nose that it doesn't completely cover, but especially for the price, super product! I've been using it under foundation and skipping the powder because Magix controls shine for me too. Never thought about skipping the foundation and just using powder, but I'll have to try that too. Another thumbs up! wub.gif

Please let us know what you think when you get it!

Anyone know how this compares to the Smashbox primer?
I like theirs but it's a little pricey.

If this one is just as good for less money I'm in!

Thanks for the head's up! biggrin.gif

Sometimes I wish that I still sold Avon...

Some ladies on the Makeupalley forum have recommended using the Monistat chafing gel as primer. It's cheap and has essentially the same silicone ingredient. I don't know how many people are comfortable using the brand "Monistat" on their face though. laugh.gif

Guess I'll have to buy some. Thanks for the rec, Ellen!

I use mineral makeup; I wonder how it would work as a primer under that?

I ordered some of this when it was first in the brochure, but I haven't received it yet. I'm anxious to try now! smile.gif

DHC's Velvet Skin Coat is the only primer I have ever tried. I got a sample once in the mail. I probably will try the Monistat.

It sounds promising! I am running low on my Estee Lauder's CP+ Perfecting lotion, which acts a lovely primer, but I have no desire to keep plunking down 50 dollar bills every month for it.

I too have tried this product . . . . great stuff imho . . . . will order it again . . . . G

Yes it works great under mineral makeup - I tried that today.

Interesting about the Monistat...

Monistat on the face, huh? Well, I guess if you pair it with the oft-recommended Preparation H under the eyes (to remedy bags, I hear), then you'll have quite the interesting combo indeed. tongue.gif

I'll bet the Monistat doesn't have a 20 SPF version, though!! unsure.gif

I have tried a large number of primers and many are like Monistat, they are silicone based and sort of settle into your pores, so that with foundation it minimises their appearance. Smashbox, Makeup forever, MAC prep and Prime and Monistat ( Cyclopentasioloxane, dimethicone, dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone, crosspolymer, silica, tocopheryl acetate and trisiloxane) are kind of identical, so I don't see why they can't be interchaged...I'd say the Monistat is the 'thickest' consistency, Smashbox is runnier.
The trick is not to apply it thickly, if you do that it actually seems to 'trap' oil and with foundation on top, as well as powder can look areal mess.
Primers are EXCELLENT under mineral makeup, which I have used for a long time. They definitely help with reducing shine, my favourite is a primer by PURELUXE, its a mineral one.

p.s Who the hell decided to put anti-chaffing stuff on their face to discover its a good primer.....likewise with preparation H for dark circles??? The mind boggles......

My husband accuses me of taking his suppositories (I don't), but if I told him about this effect he would be convinced of it.
To be honest, I have thought about sneaking one and crushing it and finding out what would happen if I put it on my face.

Wait, isn't Preparation H a cream? Or is it a suppository? I thought it was a cream that people put on their faces (and, uhh, elsewhere). And doesn't it smell bad? I seem to recall hearing somewhere that it had an awful chemical odor (I've never had the pleasure myself).

Heh - you don't want your Preparation H to clash with your' fume! Or if someone asks what scent you are wearing just tell them it's PH and let them think it's Paris Hilton! tongue.gif

There is both a cream and a suppository. I am pretty sure that they don't smell great.

Haven't tried the Preparation H... I'm sticking with my pleasant coffee-scented eye creme from 100 Percent Pure.

As for the Monistat, I bet someone who had bought the product for the intended purpose was reading the list of ingredients one day and a lightbulb went on - hey, this is the same stuff in Smashbox primer! and decided to give it a try. At least I hope that's how it happened...
Karin
I like the Avon better than Smashbox. The Avon is a keeper, very good indeed. Is supposed to be used with or without makeup. I bet Armanis could tell us how he likes it, because he is a great Avon fan (I am too!) Avon was the first with a lot of things. They've got some new products coming out that I imagine will be better than most for a fraction of the money. If I have to lay out $175, then I have to know why it is better than the other $150/$175 treatment. No one really knows between lines. I wish someone did.

Is that La Prairie really better than that Estee Lauder? etc etc.
Demetrue
My mom is running out of her Smashbox Primer and I told her about the Monistat - she is really excited to try it, but has not been able to go shopping for herself yet since she broke her ankle in July. Maybe I can order it for her from Amazon.com.
lmatchgrl
Avon's team of chemists and scientists are truly cutting edge in skin care. Avon introduced the very first alpha hydroxy to the waiting world. Karin, you're right about the price too...always cheaper than department store stuff. I've used the La Prairie product$ and they're good. But not superior to my little brown jar of Anew.
There is a product that piques my interest and it is because it comes highly recommended by a "product tester" from one of big magazines (can't remember her name or which mag she represents but her personal comments about the things she prefers run the gammit from "cheap as dirt" to the following product). The line is called Amour Pacific and their wrinkle cream is supposedly "superior to all"..."with definite observable results..."(and this is from a woman who does nothing but try new products). The stuff is approximately 175.00 or so. I am waiting till some money falls my way before buying this. Anybody familar with it? Do tell. wink.gif

I just got an e-mail from Saks and it said
"Free gift with any $300.00 purchase from La Mer".
Good god, give me a break.
They should be rewarding me with dinner at The Maisonette and paying for the gas to get there.
Thank god for Avon

Yes, 300.00 is kind of excessive to get a gift with purchase, lmatchgrl.
You can go to a dept. store counter like Estee Lauder a get a cute little bag filled with mini products, and maybe a fullsize lipstick for about 35.00 dollars.

Good choice of Avon for your skin care.
Karin
Here's a nice primer too for $12.99 on sale:

http://madminerals.org/catalog.php?item=74...hp%3Fsale%3Dyes

It's less thick than Smashbox. Avon is even thicker than Smashbox, but doesn't go on sticky (neither do either of these other ones.)

I've used alpha-hydroxies ever since Avon brought them out.

I recently have almost finished a jar of those pads that supposedly do better than a dermatologist. I like them and will buy them again. You use them every other day, so it lasts 2 mos. (Avon) Clinical Advanced Retexturizing Peel. $25

My Magix came to me in lightning time and I gave it a tour yesterday. I adore this stuff. It does not pill up when putting liquid make up over top. It fills in pores and light wrinkles giving a nicely natural & smooth looking finish. It lasts without suffocating or caking on my skin. I am totally sold on the stuff. Thank you for the recommendation!!!
VelvetSky
Just ordered mine. Will report back.
Jicky
I havn't spotted it yet in the Australian Avon books, although I may have missed it - I'll keep an eye out for it - thanks for the tip
Mariana
I ordered it too. tongue.gif And one of the lipstick ribbons, eye makeup remover, and Peach shower gel and bodyspray. Their stuff really is very reasonable. More so than drugstore brands anymore.
Fulltiltredhead
I ordered two. I hope I like it!
Rosebud
I finally got mine today! Yay! Sounds very promising, although I'm a little concerned about break-outs.

Keep us posted. I'm interested in that particular issue too.

Re: breakouts - I have skin that is very prone to breakouts but have had no problems with that since using the Magix. I can't say it prevents breakouts (some people do say that about silicone primers, though) but in my case, FWIW, it doesn't seem to cause them or make a breakout situation worse.
rebecca1964
I will have to try the Avon Magix now.
Rosebud
Thanks for answering my breakout question, Ellen. I wore this stuff today and so far I'm really liking it. My makeup still looks pretty nice and it's nearly 8:30 pm! smile.gif
Fulltiltredhead
Mine hasn't come yet, so in the meantime, I'll ask -- how close to your eyes do you put this stuff?
A as in Apple
I've been using it on my eyelids as a primer. I have very sensitive skin around my eyes and it hasn't bothered me.
Twitchly
Dumb question of the day: what is the purpose of primer? That is, who benefits from it? Only people with large pores and oily skin, or ...?

I've tried just one primer, which belonged to a friend (DHS, or something like that), and when I put foundation on over it, it looked like I was wearing a kabuki mask.

I have dry, very fine skin that can't hold much makeup. But it's ruddy, which I like to tone down.
A as in Apple
Primer is sort of like priming a surface before you paint. It helps the makeup go on smoother and more evenly and makes the skin look more perfect. Sounds like you have very nice, finely textured skin, Twitch, so a primer is probably unnecessary on your skin.

Even though my skin isn't oily anymore, I like the smooth feel of a primer and like to tell myself that it makes my skin look a little better with it than without it.
Reiha
A primer, particularly a silicone one, fills in the fine lines and wrinkles on your face to make a smoother canvas on which to apply makeup and foundation. And YMMV, but for some people it helps their makeup stay on considerably longer. For other unfortunate people such as myself, it just turns your face into a pool o' grease.
VelvetSky
Okay Ellen, I can finally give a shout out for Avon Magix.

I've been using it under my mineral foundation for about a week now, and yes...it does make my skin feel and look smoother. It also makes my makeup stay fresher looking all day. So thumbs up!

It felt a little strange going on. Definitely slippery and a bit unnatural feeling. But I'm really glad I've tried it. Thanks for the rec!

You're welcome! I am glad you like it. And you're right, it does take a little getting used to.
lmatchgrl
The only problem with this is that it requires the extra step of application. I've twice forgotten it and am pissed at myself for the rest of the day. It really does make a smoother and more lasting finish. I am blotchy by 4pm sans my Magix. sad.gif
Fulltiltredhead
The first couple of times I used it, I put on too much, and it didn't look that great. It only takes a very tiny bit. But the great thing to me is that it doesn't irritate my skin, even around my eyes. FINALLY something with sun screen that doesn't irritate my skin! That is a miracle.
LisasAura
I wonder how different this is from Bare Escentuals' Prime Time? For a silicone primer, theirs is pretty good, but no SPF. However, I'm not going to put a moisturizer on with SPF, and still require a SPF primer. I already use an SPF moisturizer daily, so the primers I use don't have SPF. Mostly, I use mineral primers, but occasionally I will use my BE Prime Time. I love that one if I have to breakout the MAC Studiofix (I rarely wear it now, thanks to mineral makeup). Can you order Avon products without a rep? It's been years since I ordered anything from Avon. I normally get Avon stuff on Ebay.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I have never tried ordering from them online.

RE: Ordering Avon online: Watch for free shipping code on any order; one usually pops up once or twice a week on the MSN.com homepage. I do this all the time; my rep still gets credit for the order and it arrives on my doorstep in about 4 days.
