Hello all! Yesterday one of two new cats came back from her spay not with a plastic cone around her neck but with, as per the official terminology on the itemized bill, an Elizabethan collar. Having always called them plastic cones, and associating Elizabethan collars with ruched accordion collars, I thought this was hysterical. The term strikes me not as more official and serious terminology but as a fancy euphemism, or as loving (toward the pet), quaint and humorous. Whatever the term, the object will be removed tonight. I imagine plastic cones for larger dogs accidentally delivered to a theatre company. Which term do you prefer? Do you smile at the term 'Elizabethan collar?'

Oh brother. Unless it *looks* like an Elizabethan collar, that's a really silly name for a plastic cone.

I know...perhaps they can charge more if it has the fancy name? rolleyes.gif

In high school I was chosen to be Queen Elizabeth I for a week, during our Elizabethan Festival.
After having worn the elaborate Elizabethan collar, a corset, and the fanny pad (can't think of the name for that) along with all of the other under-garments...I think I'd rather wear one of those cones the poor wee babies get at the vet's office. *LOL*
Imagine them calling those things that, though. *chuckling*
I honestly think my vet just calls them "cones". In fact...when my mother's dog had to wear one...he fondly called her "Ms. Conehead". biggrin.gif

I always call them "lampshades." But I love your vet's term, too!

The vet clinic my cat goes to now refers to them as E-collars. I'm reasonably certain the allusion is beyond them.

Just wait until your cat decides to start grooming themselves, and licks the inside of the collar, instead of whatever they were aiming for. Scritch, Scritch, Scritch. All night long. ohmy.gif

That's what they are called - Elizabethan or E-collars. Too funny - I just called them cones. Perhaps the most appropriate name would be an Elizabethan RUFF.
Lady jicky
They call them Elizabethan collars at our Vet and we have one and when Oscar or Rosie play up after their eye drops and rub - they get the "CONE OF SILENCE" that is what we call it at my place! They HATE it so that they sulk and try to drive the sharp plastic edge into your leg! Evil. dry.gif

Thank you all for your comments about the name, other names for the cones, pets, life! Much enjoyed your anecdote about the theatrical costuming, Catie Ribbons! Fries didn't make noise or fuss with her collar - she seemed to be irritated by it but also digging that it meant something and feeling special accordingly. Had to cut the thing off her. The plastic tabs would not come back out of the slots. Sorry to hear your dears get so contrite and leg diggy about the cones, Lady jicky! When now departed Viv was in the ICU, most of her companions were dogs with cones, and once when I was visiting her, I felt something pressing against my leg - it was a cone. A dog had inched forward to get as close as he could to contact.
