Okay. In my book, PETA just passed over the boundary from "possibly sometimes eccentric" to "nuts."
And I love animals.
But, here's a thought: could this maybe be a publicity grab?

Yes, it is just a publicity grab for PETA. They get the cheapest advertising this way.
There are too many variables, let alone the complete impracticality, to make it even remotely possible.
I think it's pretty tacky of them to belittle women in such a way. Sure, it's OK to throw paint on their fur coats. What? Will they stop if you lactate for B&J? Farking idiots.

Well, I don't feel belittled, but it is definitely tacky. A cheap and easy reach, I say.

It would cost a bloody fortune.

The WSJ featured a story on the front page yesterday about women in China selling their breast milk b/c of the high level of contaminants in commercially available cow's milk in China. (Not mentioned was the topic of adulterants in Chinese-produced baby formula, which might otherwise have been an alternative.)
So.... I guess that PETA will need to identify a large lactating population in order to make this ice cream thing possible.
Chinese babies need unadulterated milk.... and PETA is concerned about ice cream.
Strange world we live in.

Very good post, Magdalene. I nursed both my children, and I had a lot that I stored in the freezer (for when I left the baby with my in-laws) when I nursed my son. If I had extra now, I would rather donate it to needy children than make some freaky ice cream with it.

No - babies are dying from unsafe milk and PETA is concerned about the welfare of cows.
I'm not sure it would be good for all those cows to suddenly be out of a job, though.
PS I understand what you meant, but it seems even stranger when you put a cow's welfare in front of a baby's - though I'm sure the two goals don't have to be mutually exclusive.

As usual, excellent analysis!

I must say that I often find PETA's advertising campaigns to have a mysogynistic streak. Anyone remember the naked pregnant woman in a cage?
They have been playing out their campaigns using women's bodies as a canvas for a very long time. Frankly I find their methods to be a major turn off from the actual content of their message.

Oh, good grief. I checked twice to make certain that the link didn't lead me to The Onion instead.
I have zero patience for PETA. IMO, they are a terrorist organization and media whores besides. They have never gotten a dollar of my money and thet never will.

I hate PETA. They make veganism look bad... I'm all for animal rights, etc, but you're right, altodiva, they're more for shock value and they want publicity more than anything.

I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals but PETA is one big PITA! Besides how on earth are they going to get all those lactating women in a barn??

Bonnie Hunt did a bit on her show. There is a clip "New Ice Cream Flavors" in the Popular Videos section on the left of the page

It is gross, but PETA intended it to be, I think -- they're not serious, right?
They are just calling attention to the fact that, in order to produce milk for human consumption, cows are put into this state of perpetual lactation and not permitted to "dry up" naturally. Just think, all you nursing mothers, about what it would have been like to have your baby taken from you at a couple months of age and you be attached to a milking machine instead. In order for a cow to keep producing milk, she has to have recently delivered and the calf can't be permitted access to the mother, because then he'd be getting the milk, and there'd be none for us. At least that's how I think it works.
Personally, it's not the hill I'd die on, but I wouldn't argue against being fully informed.
