Full Version: Best Butterscotch Chips?

For some reason, I can't get onto Martha Stewart's forum.

I think I've bought butterscotch chips twice in the past decade and both times they were disgusting, plastic, waxy and artificial tasting.

Is there one brand that is better than another or are they all equally bad?
magdalene
I adore butterscotch. The only chips I have ever purchased are Nestle's. These seemed okay... Of course, they are better inserted into something else.

PerfumeMe, maybe you have happened upon a niche waiting to be filled! "The World's Most Authentic and Best Butterscotch Chips"!

I like Nestle's also. They're exceptionally good when "inserted" in a sour cream coffee cake. Also very good are their cinnamon chips.

Those were probably the brand i tried because they are pretty common. I read that Guittard's are supposed to be better, so I'll have to look for them. Maybe Whole Foods has them or another brand.

what do you use them for? I've always found them waxy and unappetizing, too, and I never liked them in Toll House Cookies either, so I'm curious about what people would do with them.

yes , I thought it was just me , it is popular to put them in Haystacks and I find they are nasty

I prefer butterscotch to chocolate so the concept appeals to me, but what's available is too artificial tasting. I guess butterscotch was not meant to be that conistency.

I would sooner whip up a batch of toffee and smash it up and use it in cookies if inclined. I have no idea what PerfumeMe wants to use them in though.

Sounds good, and the crunch would be an added plus.

Here is the recipe

I don't like crunchy things, so toffee wouldn't work.

I cannot vouch for these as I have not yet tried , but found this site whilst seeking other specialty flavours.

I love butterscotch too, would love to find a brand that is not waxy and plastic-tasting.

Oh, I bet those Nestles chips would be fine in that recipe. They're just not so great to eat out of hand. They don't taste like that in baked goods, which is more what they're for.

I'm famous with my friends for toffee at Xmas time.
PerfumeMe
If you read the label, you can see why they taste like plastic.

I whip up killer batches of fudge with the butterscotch chips -- usually the Nestle brand.
My best friend has a thing for butterscotch and I wanted to make some special goodies for him for Christmas...and when I saw those chips...I was inspired.
Apparently it's a big hit. I also gift my mother's and my doctor's offices, my vet's office...and quite a few other folks with baskets of goodies...and the two most popular items are the butterscotch fudge and my rum ###### made with Malibu rum.

I went to Whole Foods today and no butterscotch chips. While I was there, I read the label for white chips. It certainly was made with "whole foods" and not like Nestle's which have hydrogenated oils (transfats). I'm guessing the transfats are what cause the waxy taste.

Next stop, Bristol Farms and Gelson's, high end markets.

That's the key, then -- melt the little buggers down! I think that's what Isabella was getting at when she said she likes the flavor of butterscotch better than chocolate, but not the consistency.

Catie - did your rum b.a.l.l.s get censored? Or do you make other obscene things with Malibu?
