I've searched the internet and I've found a few sites, but they pronounced common English words incorrectly. I need a good site. Thanks!

I like this one:

Fleurry, I went to that site and plugged in the word perfume. It was pronounced with the accent on the first syllable. I usually say perfume with the accent on the second syllable, although I believe they are both correct. How do you say it?

Rosebud, for perfume names in French, we had a good pronunciation thread here a little while back. Lots of good info, in case any of the ones you wanted to look up are here:

I say it like Mike (US) does, with the accent on the second syllable.

It would be nice if instead of just US with the different pronunciations, they would specify which region it is!

Saying "perfume" with the accent on the first syllable is Southeastern U.S. It would be, specifically, Appalachian/hills n' hollers upcountry. I don't know any other U.S. regional speech that would pronounce "perfume" that way.

Thanks everyone, I will check into those sites a bit later today. I'm only on here for a brief moment right now.

F-O: Sadly, I do need it for french perfumes names sometimes, even though I took 6+ years of French classes. sad.gif

Another reason I want to find a good site is because my BF and I are having a debate on how to pronounce a few simple words. Could it be possible I've pronounced singer and hanger wrong for decades? He pronounces these words with the emphasis on the 'ger'. When I say them, the g sounds decidedly different. I wouldn't think it was a local dialect difference as we only live about 40 miles apart and are born and raised in these areas. I'm just curious to know who's pronunciation is the most common?

Love that site, Fleurry, but after I tried a couple words (which btw, sounded like the way I pronounce them!) it wanted to charge me 9.95. sad.gif Any free sites out there?

^Oh no!

That happened to me as well. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

I always understood the general rule of thumb regarding a word that is both a noun and a verb --

Noun -- accent on the first syllable
Verb -- accent on the second syllable

My family is from the northeast, by the way.

It is not 'smart.' Stresses are sometimes unusually placed; sometimes one has to tweak things to be more phonetic. Not context-sensitive, by no means perfect. As French has a much more regular relationship between pronunciation and spelling than English, the French voices are almost always accurate.
