Would you ladies have wanted this face, above all others? Did Liz possess the face, to end all faces? Was she the most 'beautiful woman, in history?'

One just cannot comment as to whether Miss Taylor/Mrs Burton..etc, etc, was the most beautiful woman in history. Perhaps she was for the period when that photo was taken but only in that current context. Every period in history has a 'most beautiful' woman and one is sure that it will continue to be so.

In my opinion, Liz, in that photo, was beautiful, but would I want to look like her? No. Do I think that she was the most beautiful woman in history? No.
I think Marilyn Monroe was the most beautiful woman in history. Would I like to look like her? You betcha!

I think she was a heartbreaker when she was young. Doesn't she kind of look like Nefertiti?
I'm not picky. I wouldn't mind looking like either Liz or Marilyn.

Oooh, this IS interesting! After reading over and over and OVER, that Liz was the most beautiful woman ever to walk the planet, and wondering HOW anyone ever thought so . . . I want so much to hear what the rest of you beauty lovers, have to say.

I certainly think she was one of the GREATS in her day! She had pretty perfect features and the famous violet eyes.....
I thought Vivian Leigh was BEAUTIFUL as we have all talked about before.

She's beautiful all right but I find Ava Gardner even more beautiful. She was gorgeous till the end like this portrait by Helmut Newton shows.

Yes, I think she was stunningly beautiful, in her day.
I wouldn't want her type of looks, though.
Frankly, I used to enjoy looking in the mirror, seeing the glaring flaws and all.
Though I've never been particularly attracted to 'blond beauty', when I saw Grace Kelly in the movie, "The Swan", eons ago...I thought....she pretty much defined 'classic' beauty, for me.
She was so beautiful, she reminded me of the most delicate pastry...and looked good enough to eat.

You all know how I feel . . . there's just no contest. I too, think that Ava Gardner was much more beautiful, than Liz . . . to be perfectly honest, I don't think Liz is even in this category. JMHO.

Yes, that was pretty convincing PR, and yes, she was completely stunning in her day. I like Marilyn and Audrey best, as you may know.
Liz, although so sparklingly pretty, always seemed a touch vacuous, in some way, at least to me. Well, so did Marilyn, but she had a reason to be spaced, after her rough childhood.
I think true beauty requires a depth of spirit, that shines in the eyes.

Of course she wassn't the most beautiful in history. At least not to everyone. How could anyone be so? Beauty, praise God, truly is in the eye of the beholder. Just remember that episode of the Twilight Zone in which a young woman patient with a standard human phenotypical face is considered hideous because she doesn't have the same hideously disfigured (to our eyes) face as everyone else in her world.

I'm not current with history and which face was popular when.
I think the photo of Liz you posted is beautiful but not how I would pick to look given the chance.
I ADORED how Catherine Deneuve looked in the Chanel#5 ads...even went so far as trying to dye my dark strands blonde (huge error!).
Grace Kelly is right up there as well...I'd kill to have looked like either one of those ladies.
Not sure who I would pick today...Angelina Jolie is striking...but not sure I'd want to look like her.

It's fascinating how we all have such different ideas about what's beautiful.
At her best, yes, E.T. was stunningly beautiful. I, personally, never found Eva Gardner to be all that beautiful--I thought she was a little "hard" looking. Vivian Leigh was technically beautiful, but I thought she looked too brittle and not soft.
Grace Kelly was, imo, one of the MOST beautiful AND classically beautiful women ever. I thought she looked both soft and intelligent--same with Jennifer Connelly.
I wouldn't mind looking like either :D

That picture of Liz Taylor is stunning. She was beautiful in her time. Another beauty in her moment of glory was Veronica Lake -she's one of my faves. http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Palace/...e/gallery1.html
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's so subjective. I showed my husband this thread and I asked him who he thought actress-wise has or had a beautiful face and he picked these classic beauties: Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn. Currently he likes Mila Jovovich and Angelina Jolie. :) Currently for me, I think Scarlett Johansson is beautiful.
P.s. Also agree with the previous posters about Grace Kelly.

I just love hearing from all of you, beauty buffs! Remember how some of you didn't like my male face, on baseball player Todd Zeile? Well . . . to me, Todd's bones and facial shape, look more like Grace Kelly's, than like Marilyn's. Marilyn's look is closer to the 'masks,' as referred to us, by rasputin.
victoria . . . I've seen more photos of LT, than I'd care to think about. I just don't see her appeal. I guess I never will. Short. Pudgy. Hairy. To me, her look is altogether vulgar. All that jewelry, just made matters worse. What's really sad is that Liz has lived long enough, to turn into the 'Picture of Dorian Gray.' She looks absolutely horrible, now . . . every drink, every cigarette, every drug she took . . . is plastered across her face. All the surgeries, too.

For each and everyone mentioned they lived unhappy lifes for all their beauty. and as each got older their beauty faded and you are all saying oh when she looked like this or that she was beautiful when. They turned to plastic surgery, drink and or drugs.
So Armanis according to you Liz should have been put down before she got old?
Think of all her charity work in older years!

Oh, no Donna . . . I don't think LT was ever beautiful. I think her current predicament is sad for HER, and for her fans, who loved her. I've always commended LT for her work to stop AIDS.

Is this face beautiful? Yes. Would I have wanted it? No, I want to be me. Did Liz possess the face to end all faces? No, that was Hedy Lamarr. Was she the most beautiful woman in history? How the heck would I know?
Any more questions? This is fun!

Personally speaking, I find that all the "classic beauties" start to get boring after awhile. Straight little nose, dainty jaw line, yawn.
The actresses who really catch my eye nowadays are the ones who look a little different. Think of Renee Zellweger, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Penelope Cruz. None of them pass the "classic beauty" test, and yet I find their looks so much more interesting, characterful, because of it.
Oh, and to answer the question, no, I would not like Elizabeth Taylor's face or anyone else's. I'm just fine with the one the genetic lottery gave me. (My coworkers say I look like Maggie Gyllenhaal. I take that as a compliment!)

Do you think if Liz Taylor were 22 and staring in movies today (2006)... she would be considered "the most beautiful" as she was in the '50s? Have beauty standards changed?

Jan 1 2006, 05:35 PM
I think you have a good point about vulgarity, Armanis. But that vulgar streak is what made her kind of beauty so hypnotic to the common man. Grace Kelly is more objectively beautiful than Liz, by far - but it's a remote, deodorized beauty, while Liz was (or seemed, at least) all about sex. Vivien Leigh's beauty is similar to GK's in its perfect symmetry, though lacking Grace's look of serenity and strength.
Would I want to look like any of them? I think it's more fun to look at them than it would be to look like them.

I liked Liz back when she was very young. She looked like a real pretty girl, soft and cuddly and not like some sanitized and polished to the point of inhumanness creature.
Yes she was small and dark...Jolly GOOD. I am small and dark and only in the eyes of certain sorts of person would that necessarily be synonymous with vulgarity.
That said, once the first blush of youth was off our Liz did suffer from the curse of blowsiness, which she largely brought on herself through her habits.
To be fair it was probably largely a reaction against the MGM-ization of her life to that point. She is, as we have seen a pretty warm, real, and compassionate person (we short, dark people often are *wink*)
Would I want to look like her, even at her peak...well no, though to be honest it would be far easier for me to look like her than to look like Grace Kelly.
If I had to look like anyone I'd pick someone who is a hundred years out of date and very girlish, because at heart, no matter how unfashionable it is to admit, I don't feel comfortable in the role of "woman" and I'm terribly turn of the century at heart.
Soooooo...I'd pick Evelyn Nesbit circa 1906

Yes, I think that Liz Taylor was very beautiful. I think she was absolutely breathtaking when she was 18 in Father of the Bride. Also Vivien Leigh. Marilyn. And many others. I don't think any of these women were the 'most beautiful in history', however. I don't think there is/was such a thing.
While Vivien Leigh was certainly physically stunning, her high strung, hysterical and basically insane personality detracted from her looks somewhat (to me). I can't look at her and not see her craziness. She certainly was a beauty, though, crazy or not.
Ava Gardner was gorgeous. So was Lana Turner; Grace Kelly; Lena Horne; and sweet and elegant Audrey. How can anyone say, 'most beautiful'? There are many types of beauty.

Liz Taylor said in one of her books (I can't remember the name) that she wished she looked like Rhonda Fleming.
Remember the movie Elephant Walk? Vivien Leigh was originally cast and the long shots of the character running through the house were of her. I thought Liz Taylor looked good in that movie, with the Vivien Leigh hairstyle.

I have to add (for Butterscotch) that "small and dark" are not the qualities connoting vulgarity (to me) in LT.
Salma Hayek, Sonia Braga, Lisa Bonet: each stunning, small, dark and exquisitely refined in their beauty - and you don't have to think very hard to come up with some gorgeous blondes with a touch of the earth, either.
Evelyn Nesbitt is a peach!

Yes, I think Liz was beautiful. She's a lot older now and a little dumpy - big deal.
IMO, Sophia Loren was and is very beautiful.

hiris, I felt this was a 'life' question, about an 'artist.' That's why I posted on this board.
Butterscotch, Merle Oberon was shorter and darker than LT; I never found her to be vulgar. I'm short and dark. I don't think I'm vulgar looking . . . although some of you may disagree. What makes Liz vulgar looking to me, is an overall crudeness in her look. Nothing too hot on bone structure . . . nose and lips are okay . . . so you've got these huge eyes, with gargantuan brows above them. Worse still, is the fact that as Liz matured, her horrible taste in makeup, hairstyles, clothes, jewelry, etc. . . . REALLY made her look bad: like an escapee from a sideshow. Am not one for gaudy jewelry, no matter how expensive. I think it makes a woman look weary, and cheap.
As for Vivien Leigh, when I first saw GWTW, I was confused: 'Mom, I thought Scarlett wasn't supposed to be beautiful?? This actress is gorgeous . . . ' Have never felt that way about any woman onscreen, before or since.

Velvet, have you read Eddie Fisher's bio?? You might want to do so . . . the fact that Liz Taylor is still alive, is a MIRACLE. I have never read so wanton a depiction of substance abuse. Not about someone who is still living, at Taylor's age. Never. I'm glad you think Miss Taylor was stunning. I commend her for trying to stop Aids. But I think she has horrible taste. :-) Especially in the hairstyling, department.

Out of curiosity, what current actresses do you find attractive?
The Refined One
Jan 1 2006, 08:08 PM
Beautiful, yes.
Want to look like her? No.
Most beautiful ever? No, but I don't think such a person exists.
Vivian was beautiful, but in nearly every picture of her, her eyebrows don't look like they match - one very arched, one mostly straight. Or was this just something she did with her eyes???
When I was a little girl I wanted to look like Rita Hayworth (mostly it was her hair and the nightgown.) A little older and I thought Grace Kelly and Catherine Deneuve were two of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen.
Today I think Charlize Theron is beautiful, along with so many others, but my favorite is Halle Berry. Her nose is probably too wide for "classic" beauty, but if I didn't look like me, I wouldn't mind looking like her! Great face, beautiful skin tone, great body.

Oh, I so agree! Charlize is a classic beauty. But to be persnickety about it -- Halle Berry is PRETTY rather than beautiful, IMO. Pretty, to me, is a little more accessible and has more charm than "beautiful." I think Halle Berry is the prettiest thing I've ever seen, from her head to her toes. There's not a flaw on her. I can't think of another human being I can say that about.

Sure I think ET was very beautiful in a serious, womanly, smoldering way, but I never saw much humour or joy or light-heartedness in most of the characters she played as an adult. I totally understand what FT-Red means about "pretty" - I kind of prefer "pretty" to elegant beauty, because there is often a sparkle and playful quality about "pretty" - a humour and bright intelligence - that sometimes seems lacking in "beauty". Let's just say that no matter how gorgeous someone's physical features are, I find someone who can make me laugh very attractive.
