I didn't do my normal "southern meal" today.......but I did do the "short version".
I usually have people over and have a Pork Roast, garlic cheese grits, collard greens, black eyed peas...and corn bread with some decatant dessert!.......
This year I was at my daughter's for NY Eve...and we got home very late from a party...........
I got up and started some greens and some black eyed peas...
The greens are for MONEY!
The black eyed peas are for good luck!
I did eat some kale today and have black eyed peas still on the oven....does anybody else do the GOOD LUCK dinner?

Yup, had my black eyed peas for luck today. Gotta do that. Had kale and one of those spiral cut honey hams.
Tomorrow is the day of reckoning...back on the diet, back on the treadmill.

Of all the foods in the world, two of the maybe five I don't like are greens and black eyed peas. Darn! Maybe I'd have better luck if I ate them anyway...

I make lentil soup all the time, but not for this day. Made ribs, black eyed peas, and collards with a smoked ham bone a few years ago (TBS Dinner & A Movie featured recipe) but it was awfully salty, will try it again sometime. My traditional New Years Day food is: macaroni and shrimp salad - little seashells, canned shrimp, finely diced celery/onion/hard-boiled egg, and lots of mayo, mmmmmmmm :D. (This is a holdover from my hard-partying days when I would be unable to do much of anything on New Years Day, much less cook, thankfully I outgrew that.)

Oh Fulltilt! You'd love my greens! Made with red pepper flakes, garlic, onion, ham hocks...Chardonnay and soy sauce.......I never liked greens either until I tried Justin Wilson's recipe.

Our good luck dinner is sauerkraut, hot dogs, pork, kielbasa, mashed potatoes, and dumplings! ;-)

Just have to put in we spent New Years Day with a couple of charming Greek relatives of my husband. We had a traditional Greek cake called Vasilopita, which is a plain cake covered with sesame seed. There is a coin hidden in the cake, winner gets good luck for the next year (I got the coin :D). And we had the Greek macaroni dish called Pastitsos, made like baked ziti but with a bland white sauce, no cheese that I could detect, and a dash of cinnamon. This last needed something desperately, it was lukewarm and bland and .... eggy. Like scrambled eggs that were underdone. Other than that, a lovely time was had by all :) .
