I'm not a huge fan of donuts, but twice a year I will indulge in a donut. My favorite donut is the Buttermilk donut.

What's yours?

The first donut in this pic is a buttermilk donut.

I love buttermilk donuts too! Iced or chocolate covered old-fashioneds. My other big favorite is a plain vanilla cake donut with white icing and colored sprinkles. I only have one a couple of times a year, but it's been quite a while, maybe there will be one soon! Thanks for the enticing photo. :-)

I like the buttermilk donut, too. I just forgot what it was called. I think it is called something else around here, but I recognized the shape.
I like the bear claw, also.
Apple fritters.
Those cake donuts that are dipped in chocolate, not frosting, but chocolate dip coating.
The same cake donuts, only with powdered sugar on the outside.
Great topic, dawn!

A fresh big puffy glazed doughnut from Stan's Donuts in Santa Clara, CA is close to heaven, IMO. I treat myself probably twice a year to this treat. rolleyes.gif

I think local independent donut shops usually make the best ones. Can't stand Krispy Kreme or Dunkin D's.
Chenas
The Dunkin Donuts French Cruller.

Certain Dunkin Donuts have peanut butter and jelly donuts. Oooooooh, myyyyyyyy, but they're yummy.

(This doesn't count as a doughnut, but I recently had a glazed croissant for the first time. While I was chewing it, I was convinced I had seen the Lord.)
cazaubon
Oh yes - they have these wonderful glazed almond croissants here in San Diego at Bread & Compagnie. So divine!

Though I tend to scoff at doughnuts -you cannot swing a cat without hitting a doughnut joint in these parts- I have to say I am partial to toasted coconut on chocolate or cruller, yes, both from Timmy's.
isabellabird
I don't especially like doughnuts, but if pressed, add me to the cruller contingent.
Perfumefanatic
I'll take all the jelly filled, thank you!

OMG! I must try one of those soon! Have never heard of an glazed almond croissant before. I love croissants and I love almonds. WHat a blissful combo.

Glad you like this topic R1964. smile.gif My dad loves the bear claw also and the apple fritters. I'll have to check out the chocolate dipped ones you mentioned. smile.gif

Bear claws are really popular in the little independently run donut shop in our neighborhood. My hubby likes them too.

I love the custard filled with banana favoured icing ones & in equal second place:- jam filled donuts & old fashioned cinnamon sugar donuts.

I haven't eaten donuts in ages, now I'm very tempted to buy a special treat for myself this afternoon.....

Krispy Kreme chocolate iced cake.

Apple fritters if pressed. Lived on those and a huge coffee in undergrad. Used to love those pillow-shaped harder dough items sold in chocolate and soylent pink cherry flavours but not so much now. A doughnut hole in cinnamon flavour is nice. Had a pastry last week made of two doughnut holes filled with jam and cream, conjoined, and saturated with grenadine. It looked obscene but was very tasty.

PASTRY PORN!!!! laugh.gif

My faves are ordinary glazed, or jelly. Can't stand anything chocolate or chocolate glazed or with chocolate sprinkles. Dunkin Donuts is pretty good but nothing beats a hot Krispy Kreme (although the one KK I knew of in NYC closed and I don't know if there are any others...maybe that's best in the long run!)

A regular glazed Krispy Kreme, hot off the conveyor belt. It's a sweet puff of yeasty heaven that explodes all pleasure centers of the brain.

A little off-topic, but not really - Does anyone make doughnuts at home? I see recipes in magazines all the time, but making doughnuts just ain't gonna happen at my house. happy.gif

Can't do donuts. Have not been able to since my 6-month stint in a bakery at the age of 19.

When I did enjoy them, however, I had 2 favorites: powdered sugar cake and unglazed buttermilk (old fashioned).

My aunt used to make donuts at home. She had 8 kids, so it was more cost effective.

Ain't it the truth, sistah!

I like cake donuts too, as long as they aren't dry.

Throughout central Pa on Shrove Tuesday (the day before lent) Churches, Scout troops, VFWs, The Eastern Star and anyone with a pot of grease and some flour makes doughnuts.
It is a hallowed and sacred day.
We gave thanks for the blessings of the holy doughnut. (pun intended)
Doughnuts are best made outside in a turkey fryer Miss Apple. It's good to have a crowd of people to help cook and clean cause, even outside, it's a messy task.

There's a Krispy Kreme in Penn Station near Amtrak.  At least it was there in June.

The best donuts I ever had were from Mrs. Obco's in Toms River, NJ.  I hope that place is still there.    sleep.gif

I haven't eaten a doughnut in years. It's just one of those foods of which I'm rather fond, but for some reason never get around to eating, and I don't miss them or th ink about them until a thread like this brings it up laugh.gif

My absolute favorite is a glazed doughnut from Tato-Nut. It's a hometown shop, but from what I understand, there used to be more shops with similar potato-based doughs elsewhere.

My second favorite is from a place called Shipley's. There's a single shop near my old hometown, but I understand that it's a franchise, with lots of stores in Texas.

Years ago, another local shop (since closed) had the best cream filled doughnuts. Loved those. Others don't compare.

Sad to say, I would probably worship at that altar if I lived in central PA, lMatchgirl. rolleyes.gif

All of them! Seriously

Coconut, chocolate, buttermilk, frosted etc etc.

Krispy Kreme is GOOD! laugh.gif
Hoos
Cinnamon rolls. Glazed cinnamon rolls. Not the ones with white frosting.

After that, glazed raised, apple fritters, and glazed jelly or cream filled.

I like Boston cremes too.

When I was growing up in Canada, we called this a "bismarck."

But here in Boston, it's a Boston creme, and a bismarck is like a yeasted donut stick, split down the middle, and piped with raspberry jelly and whipped cream. Mmmm....

I think I'll have a donut maybe twice a year, if that. Some people love them and have them every week.
I'm not a big fan of Krispy Kreme glazed - they seem so sweet to me. I like the independent donut shops. I think my favorites are crumb cake donuts; followed by a vanilla with sprinkles or strawberry with sprinkles cake donut. I also like Glazed Twists, Maple bars, Chocolate Bars and Apple Fritters. But I can't remember when I last had one of those.
We don't have Dunkin' Donuts shops here in So. Ca, but we did when I was a kid. They had three I just loved: chocolate honey dipped (to die for), and then the creme filled and chocolate creme filled. Those are what I would call fabulously fake.

Me, too. I think it comes from having too many donuts in too many meetings over the years. If I get that rare craving, I like a glazed donut. Otherwise, give me a croissant any day.

When I was a little girl my grandmother and I made beignets with violet jelly from flowers gathered in her garden. The closest thing I've found is rose-petal jam pączki.

In Poland, pączki are prepared on Tlusty Czwartek (Fat Thursday / Shrove Thursday), the Thursday preceeding Ash Wednesday. In the USA, because of the influence of Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), they are prepared on Shrove Tuesday just like the doughnuts in central Pennsylvania that Imatchgrl describes. The idea is to use all the foods (milk, butter, eggs, et al.) which are forbidden during Lenten fasting..

It is a hallowed and sacred day, indeed. Traditionalists hop in their winter cars at 4:00am and drive to one of the bakeries where the pączki and fillings are made from scratch in the old Polish neighborhood on the south side of town. Get there early; sell-outs occur by six o'clock. They wait to buy a half-dozen rose and a half-dozen prune pączki then go to the public well on Pryor Street and fill their glass gallon milk bottles with iron water to make coffee.

A woman walks into a bakery, looks around and asks the young girl behind the counter, "Everything looks so delicious! How do you stay so slim?" The girl says, "Oh, I don't eat them. I just lick the frosting."

Bah dah bing, bah dah boom.

They leave me cold, actually. The BF loves them and has them several times a week. I can sit right next to them and never be tempted. They just don't do it for me.

Wow - been a looong time since I've eaten pączki. I'd love one with rose-petal jam! As long as it doesn't have raisins....

Krispy Kreme does nothing for me, and I think they've closed all the ones in the Baltimore area so it's just as well. My favorite donuts at DDs are the apple fritters they make with all the leftover fillings and nuts at the end of the day - chop sueys. I also like the chocolate cake donuts and the crullers, although the glaze on the latter seems to have a weird consistency these days (had one this morning).
