I saw I film I'd never seen before this morning--- the 1953 version of TITANIC. It was quite good.
What I notice, in all versions of the Titanic story prior to the James Cameron version, is that they do not portray the sinking of the ship the way it happened in real life: the ship split in two, one half went down, then the other half plunged straight down. It did not, as earlier depictions claim, slide lengthwise, diagonally into the water.

I love the 1953 version too, while it may not be quite as factual, i did not enjoy the latest version, other than the documentary on how it was made, (they certainly went to incredible lengths on its authenticity) - The '53 version is a very well made film, and still has an interesting story line. As you watch it you pick up all the little errors history has since discovered, it's still easier to watch than Leonardo and Kate W.
Give me Leonardo in What's Eating Gilbert Grape any day.

Click to view attachmentOh, I too enjoy this film! I'll have to check if AMC is planning to re-air, it. Barbara Stanwyck is always a solid performer, and I love Clifton Webb . . . btw: David, you have GOT to see . . . Woman's World.Back to Titanic . . . I like the side story, in this film . . . about the illegitimate child. Another, even better screen version of the Titanic tale, is A NIGHT TO REMEMBER. Spellbinding, riveting movie. The Cameron version, I think, is CLOSE TO UNWATCHABLE. Talk about 'le bad,' rising to the surface! I laughed through the love scenes, through the swing around dance, straight out of AIRPLANE, and through much of the rest of the movie. In the end, I felt like a prune. Ridiculous film.

Late at night, when I can't sleep, and I'm flipping through the channels...if I hit "Titanic" -- the Cameron version -- I am usually powerless to change the channel. My husband is the same way. And we both sit and watch it, through to the bitter end.
*sigh*
I know...there's a lot of hokiness...and there's the romance, but the colors are so vivid...and it's really entertaining, to me...and I can stare at Kate Winslet, looking like that, for hours...
Oh, well. Give me marks for bad taste, if you must, but I love that movie.
Oddly, I don't care for other versions, but DO love to watch any and all documentaries about Titanic.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the movie "A Night to Remember" was made from the book of the same name. Originally no one seemed to believe those who claimed that the ship split in two before it sank. Possibly they believed it was so dark that no one could see clearly or it just seemed improbable that the "unsinkable" ship could not only sink but split in two.
Whatever the cause the Titanic has always been a point of interest to me. At least with the tremendous loss of lives some laws were changed.

"A Night to Remember"
Is that the one starring Kenneth Moore? That is the favourite movie of mine on the titanic - it had such an effect on me when I first saw it when young, that nothing has been able to replace it since. I think the acting in that one is very well done too.
Please don't worry about which one you prefer, we all have different tastes in movies. My favourite movie is one most people can't even remember seeing - "Awakenings" with Robin Williams and Robert de Niro.

Jicky, "Awakenings" touched me so! It's also one of my favourite films.
I adore a lot of obscure little films that most people have never heard of, let alone seen...and that's OK. I love to introduce them to folks.
