Ok, I'd like a few ideas on microwaving fresh fish, so I can start taking some to work. I'm probably talking about cod in general. Any ideas?

Does anyone microwave fish?

Don't do it at work! I did once and nearly got thrown out. The whole place smelled like fish the rest of the day.

I think you're better off to cook it in a pan. I saute garlic, 1 can tomatoes, chopped RED peppers, onion, in olive oil.......add some hot pepper flakes, then lots of fresh basil, italian parsley and after it's sauted a little while I add Chardonnay and let that reduce. Then put the cod in.......cover it with the veggies and put the top on the skillet on LOW. Let it poach for 6 min. Done and magnifico!
If you have lots of veggies left, freeze it for the next time.

Try my Delicious Fishes recipe in the Food section. I didn't think I liked fish.

Here is where I come out of the closet with my passion for certain reality tv shows. :)

If you go to the Bravo website for the show Top Chef, there was a microwave episode in which one of the chefs (Tiffani) did a microwave escolar fish that was supposed to be really delicious. Apparently the key is to find a fish with a high fat content, use yummy marinade and then the microwave acts as a steamer. Here, letme see if I can find the recipe....

So, it looks like you sear the fish on one side first, but it apparently was yummy.
Vic, you could sear the fish the night/afternoon before, put the fish in its container in the fridge, & microwave the whole thing at work the next day.
The episode from which this comes was actually designed for people who wanted good microwaveable food they could take to work.

I'm really intent on cooking at work, none the less. We have a big kitchen and only 4 employees, so I don't think it will be that bad. I don't have time to prepare anything at home. Thanks Inky, that's definitely what I'm looking for, but I'm not familiar with those ingredients. And I wonder why you need to sear one side?

I'm wondering If I can't just buy some kind of lemon marinade, then micro it the next day. I've just never done fish in the micro and I'm a bit scared, I want to make sure it's done all the way. I also have this microwave steamer from Tupperware, you put water in the bottom, maybe that would be the answer. I dunno but I need to add more fish to my diet.

Vic, you can usually find those in the Asian-foods section of your grocery store. Miso is usually in the fridge section (it's soybean paste - miso-marinated fish is verrrrrry yummy), teriyaki sauce should be available in a bottle, mirin is just Japanese rice wine, and instead of Shaoxing wine you can substitite any sherry (which is easier to find).
I think any fish with a high fat content would work (I think the idea is that the microwave loves fat and sugar molecules).

In any case, good luck!

I would much rather cook or partially cook the fish and then simply reheat the fish in the microwave. This way you know the fish was cooked all the way through and heating it up takes even less time.

Otherwise, if you are intent on cooking the fish from scratch, cut it into smaller pieces versus a full slab and make sure you stir/turn them around (even if you have a turntable thingie, much of the heat is on the outside rims, so turning them from in to out cooks them more thoroughly).

I agree that adding lemon and garlic will help with smell. I notice cod seems to smell up my kitchen much more than, say, Salmon. Tuna is OK and perch is horrible.

just my 2cents.

Make sure the cod is cooked thoroughly. Of all the fish that we eat, cod has the biggest amount of parasitic worms in it. You know when you eat fish and you see those little dark threads that you think might be veins? They are the worms.
victoria
Ack Barry!! You are freaking me out!! Worms? Good Lord, I'm having second thoughts. What about a nice thin ocean pearch filet, or mahi mahi?
Prince Barry
That's probably better.

If I freaked you out, I suggest that you don't do a Google search for 'worms in cod' or 'cod parasites'.
