Full Version: Odd Snacks: Weird But Good

Recently, as the result of having no more bread in the apartment but wanting cheese right away, I stumbled on a snack that sounds bizarre but it actually delish.

- Nuke some leftover white rice (or use fresh, if it's convenient)
- When it's hot, add a bunch (however much you like) of crumbly blue cheese (I like gorgonzola)
- Stir in some balsamic vinegar and add roasted pine nuts (throw hand a handful into a hot pan for a few minutes and flip a few times) to taste

Absolutely delicious & satisfying, and I now eat this all the time. Takes about 3 or 4 minutes to make, and all of the oil and fat comes from the cheese and the pine nuts, so it at least feels healthy!

Do any of you have favorite Sounds Weird But Is Actually Delish munchies?

Eat well,
Carla
Fulltiltredhead
Dill pickles with peanut butter

Oh, and Inky, that sounds yummy.

That sounds tasty, Carla.

My youngest child had a few ear infections when he started preschool, which would make him wildly sick and feverish. As soon as he was through the crisis with the fevers, he would beg for strong blue cheese as the first food. I wonder whether it has a natural penicillin or just the extreme savory quality brought him back to his physical senses?

For breakfast lately I have been having nice sour cream-topped yogurt stirred with kalamata olives, walnuts, a drizzle of olive oil, pinch of salt and shake of smoked
Spanish paprika. It isn't on any recipe list I've ever seen, but it is really wonderful with a cup of coffee.

Love the PB/pickles. I recall posting it here once and was happy that those who tried it liked it :-))

As for your odd rice dish--doesn't seem odd to me at all. After all it is only slightly different than mac & cheese ;-)

I don't think I have any odd ones off the top of my head.
Sardine sandwiches, but that's not odd unless you dislike sardines.

Marinated, baked tofu...just eaten straight. Not odd either unless you dislike tofu.

Can't wait to see the list that develops.

Oh, my old roommate used to make ramen noodles, then add a huge tablespoon of mayo and stirred in a raw egg (that cooked from the heat of the broth/noodles). The egg part isn't too weird (egg drop soup and all), but the mayo threw me. Tasty but odd.

Hmmn, Prince Barry--I had no idea Brits were so big on insect consumption--and I am not even going to contemplate monkey-picked tea.

Anyway, my odd snacks are pretty tame. Over the years I've been fond of:

Shredded wheat doused in buttermilk
Contadina tomato paste right out of the can (no other brand would do)
Raw Gala apples sprinkled with heaps of ground cumin, fennel, anise, and turmeric

These days I am not a big snacker, but sometimes I like to chow down on those little Gerber sausages made for toddlers
Catie Ribbons
Smoked oysters and sharp cheddar cheese, on low-salt crackers, topped with a smidge of grape jelly.
And washed down with a good, strong apple cider.
Prince Barry
To be honest Bittergrace, I didn't either.

Nothing odd really...
Green apple slices dipped in peanut butter, love it.
Didn't think it odd, until a couple of people at the office told me it was. I thought everyone in America had eaten this before.
Other than that, I like hotsauce on everything - on my popcorn. The light or white kind, I don't like the buttery stuff.

I often have that for a quick lunch, sliced apples dipped in peanut butter. People really think it's odd? Well! I think eating peanut butter with jelly on mushy white bread that glues itself in the roof of the mouth is a strange idea of good eating. So there, judgmental office people!

DH eats popcorn with hotsauce and Kikkoman. Also eats his oatmeal that way. Actually, it does taste pleasant.
