I love the new Hagen Daaz Mango Ice Cream!
Other widely distributed ice cream flavors that I like
-- Ben and Jerry Cherry Garcia
-- Haagen Daaz Dulche de Leche (highest calorie concentration of all the Haagen Daaz flavors, I believe, but worth it).
Anyone know of a good, widely distributed pistachio ice cream that has intense pistachio flavor and DOES NOT have nut bits? That's what I would like. There's a good gelateria in New York that makes pistachio icecream to my specifications, but if anyone knows of such an icecream that could be found in a grocery store, I would be grateful.

I am with you both on the Haagen Dazs Mango Ice Cream and Sorbet. But the ice cream isn't new. I've seen it in the grocery store the last few years. I just had the most delicious butter almond from a local ice cream store in South Lake Tahoe, CA across the street from the Camp Richardson Resort.
1) Haagen Dazs Mango Ice Cream
2) Haagen Dazs Mango Sorbet
3) Baskin Robbins Lemon Custard Ice Cream
4) Breyer's Peach Ice Cream

7) homemade lemon sherbet
8) homemade orange sherbet

Don't laugh, but many years ago a doctor told me to eat at least a pint of the highest fat content ice cream I could find every night to GAIN weight. (Not a problem now!) Within a week I couldn't look at ice cream and am still not fond of any.

If you can get to an Indian grocery, they make a frozen confection called Kulfi. It comes in pistachio, rose, saffron, cardamom, or mango. It's rich, naturally flavored, and transcendent. The best frozen pistachio creation ever.

I don't really care for ice cream, but when I was younger and we went to a Baskin & Robbins, I usally got the fudge brownie or the mocha almond fudge flavors.
I just couldn't imagine anyone going in there and getting vanilla.
Now that I'm older, and eat ice cream even less...it's pretty much ONLY Bluebell Homemade Vanilla or actual homemade vanilla.
But...it's rare that I crave the stuff.

I love kulfi, but prefer the rose/cardamom flavored kulfi to the pistachio. Payard in my neighborhood makes a good pistachio icecream sans nuts, but it's not always available.
If only Haagen Daz or Ben and Jerry's would get into Asian ice cream like kulfi or green tea icecream.
When I had an ice cream maker, I would make icecream out of verbena tea or Earl Grey tea. They were very nice and super easy. No need to make a custard. I just infused the milk with verbena or Earl Grey.

Yum - Rose & Lemon - that sounds delicious!
Speaking of Italy, I prefer gelato over ice cream or sherbert. My favourite gelato flavours include:
Bacio
Pistachio
Raspberry

BLUE-BELL brand "Homemade Vanilla" (it's sweet, egg-y, and slightly salty.....mmmm)
(Is this Texas brand available all over the USA, I wonder?)
Also, when Haagen-Dazs first came out in the early 80's, they used to make a sorbet called CASSIS. It was a purple, very tart blackcurrant sorbet that I used to adore... It was perfect as an entremes, but I liked it anytime.

New York City is blessed with two very good sources for gelato: Cones, a stand-alone scoop shop on Bleecker Street and Otto, on Fifth Avenue at 8th Street, one of the restaurants in the Mario Batali empire.
At Cones, I always seem to get the Dulce de Leche; at Otto, I tend to go for whatever surprise the magnificent pastry chef has put together.

Actually, the nicest ice creams I have ever had are:
1. My first dish of coffee ice cream at Schrafft's in New York while out to lunch with my grandmother. I was seven and already loved coffee. What a thrill to have it served to me for the asking, disguised as ice cream. Dannon coffee yogurt served the same purpose - grownups were so happy to see a child eating healthy yogurt, nevermind it was my covert way of getting the java.
2. At a picnic, a friend with an ice cream maker put cream, sour cream, and crushed canned pineapple into the canister. OMG.

Pistachio icecream. With crushed bits of pistachio, coconut shavings and unsweetened coconut milk drizzled on top.
I don't eat ice cream often, so when I do, I like to really treat myself. Sort of a PMS fiesta, if you will...

Renee, then you NEED to try Blue Bell's Homemade Vanilla. It's a little bit of heaven...in a bowl.
But...it may not be the kind of vanilla ice cream everyone likes. It very much has a condensed milk taste. Custard-y, almost. Rich, rich...yummy.
For a short time...I became quite addicted to it.
Years ago...when I worked in a mall...there was an old-timey drug store next to the store in which I worked, if you can imagine such a thing in a mall...and they had the best rum raisin I've ever eaten...and I got hooked on that.
I'm definitely a one flavor kind of gal, when I DO have a hankerin' for ice cream. LOL

I limit myself due to my neurotic inspection of ingredients.
The ones that made it with my restrictions and I love are:
Hagaan-daz Vanilla, H-D Strawberry;
Breyers (in the black box) Coffee.
I haven't found a chocolate I adore and the Hagaan-daz coffee is OK but not outstanding.
If I had to pick one, it would be the HD strawberry--for purity of ingredients, creamy, luscious true strawberry taste and overall balance of creaminess to flavor to amount of strawberries found.

we do home-made at the cabin every summer with an 19th century machine garnished with fresh berries: wild raspberries, wild blueberries or wild strawberries.. the ice-cream is always a vanilla custard and cranked by hand! Nothing, ever, anywhere is better than this stuff.

I am with you, winemaven. I don't like buying ice creams with lots of extra ingredients and stabilizers. That's why the original Breyer's flavors, before they started coming out with all these new and crazy flavors, are the only ones I like eating.

Berthillon is one of the greats. My favorites are the prune armagnac and the pain d'epices (gingerbread). The salty caramel is also good.
The Maison du Chocolat branches in New York also make a salty caramel ice cream that's only available in the summer. Total yum.

Hagen Daaz Vanilla, IMHO, is the best vanilla around, and the "Lite" version is really just as good! What a surprise that was!
My most recent vice, though, is the HD Caramel Cone Crunch, which also comes in regular and lite, and both are equally good.
Being virtuous is not at the top of my list when it comes to ice cream - let me go down with the tast of full butterfat on my lips, or not at all! - is my motto, but when they actually do make a low fat version that tastes like something more than just air, that's great.

Haagen Dazs Rum Raisin and Breyer's Butter Almond, of the widely available brands. I don't like Ben & Jerry's; their flavors are always too busy.
I'm very fond of a brand of gelato called Doriti. It's been my downfall lately, especially the Crema Caffe and Amaretto.

Mint chocolate chip, black cherry, chocolate chip cookie dough, dulce de leche, pistachio and blackberry sherbet are my favorite general flavors.
I think Starbucks coffee ice cream is the best coffee one, and I generally stick with Haagen Dazs or Ben & Jerry's brand-wise.

Icecream: Strawberry on its own
In a milkshake or thickshake: Chocolate
In a spider drink: Lime
