Full Version: Evie Sands!

When chroniclers of the 60's talk about musical artistes who should've had fame & success, but didn't, surely Evie Sands ranks high on their lists.

Evie was a "blue-eyed soul" singer from Brooklyn. Her mentor/svengali was Chip Taylor. Both Evie and Chip still tour, write and play today.

Evie's closest brushes with fame were:

a). She had a minor "girl group" hit in the early 60's with the song, "I Can't Let Go", later covered successfully by The Hollies and by Linda Ronstadt.

b). She recorded the FIRST version of the song "Angel Of The Morning", but Merrillee Rush and The Turnabouts had the hit with it in 1968.

c). Her own song, "Any Way That You Want Me" was a big hit in the UK for The Troggs ("Wild Thing").

Anyway, Evie's recordings are all new to me, and I'm just really grooving on them. Would you like to hear some of her tunes? PM and I'll send you some. You might be surprised at how powerful these records still are.

Best, D.

Happy for you, rasputin . . . I've been groovin' and movin', to the Royalettes . . .

Here are some photos of Evie...

Well, I've had now, the opportunity to listen to Evie . . . most impressive. A voice of stature, thought, and restraint. Familiar, yet . . . not so much. Perhaps a melange of Kim Carnes, Dusty Springfield . . . Bobbie Gentry, and Juice Newton??

My biggest surprise, Armanis, after hearing these recordings for the first time, was learning that Evie Sands is white! She really does sound black/soulful/gospel on these recordings... In fact, she most reminds me of none other than Dee Dee Warwick (see attachment), Dionne's younger sister by four years.

Like Evie, Dee Dee has some excellent sides ("sides"=45rpm releases, in record collector's speak) that collectors are crazy about... She's another who deserved much more attention than she received, both from producers and audiences of the late-1960's. I can send along some great Dee Dee cuts to anyone here who'd like to hear her... Her sound is nothing like Dionne's... it's closer to Aretha Franklin's.

BTW, no less than Dusty Springfield said that Evie Sands was her favorite American girl singer!

rasputin . . . I KNEW that Evie was white . . . never once, thought she was a black singer. Doesn't sound black to me, at all . . . her rhythm is too staccato.
